B&W DM12 (low consecutive serials)

Hello all. My name is Hans. I live in Belgium and I am on to my very first post. First of all I do want to stress that I realise the value of this organisation as many of AudioKarma's members have unknowingly helped me countless times by providing me with targeted information during these endless audio quests. Great that all audio enthusiasts can freely enjoy the multiple benefits of a global network through a plaform like AudioKarma.

Here's one for the 'What's-it-worth?' category. After reading conflicting opinions on the subject of the value of loudspeakers with consecutive low serial numbers. A set of B&W DM12 speakers. Picked them up at the local thrift store for about 50 bucks and they are in perfect condition. Consecutive serials <500 (00485 & 00486). Should be set nr. 243!

What are they worth?

I recently got $300 for a pair of their big brother DM14. I kind of wish I hadn't sold them, they were fantastic sounding speakers. I don't know that low SN will mean much to anyone but the most avid collector.

Thanks markshan! The DM12 is a great speaker. The DM14 outclasses its small brother and it is indeed sad to hear you sold them. What interests me the most is your contribution to the obvious fact that we are discussing a certain kind of 'collector's value', rather than me wanting to see any number in dollars ... Thanks for your feedback! Appreciate it.

I found the pair (no stands) at the GW outlet for $10. It was almost time to go on our annual summer vacation and I was tight. I had listened to them in my basement (where good sounding speakers go to die) and thought "yeah, they're okay". When I brought them upstairs to demo for the guy, he couldn't pull out the money fast enough. I listened in a good sounding room and had this sinking feeling that I was making a mistake. My daughter played a CD by a rapper named LaCrae (I think) and one song had electronic bells and I had never heard such lifelike, in the room highs before or since. I played "Wish You Were Here" for the buyer and the fullness of the sound was quite impressive for a box that size. Oh, well, at least we didn't have to pinch pennies quite so tightly on vacation that week.

As to the other stuff, just my opinion. That and $3 will get you a cup of coffee, but you are welcome.

I wonder how the DM12s and a nice sub would play together.
