B&W DM16 crossover question.

I was recently gifted a pair of these fascinating speakers. I've discovered that one of the speakers has a non-functioning mid-range. The Kevlar driver itself is okay and registers 9 ohms of resistance.
Upon exposing the crossover I noticed a blackened area which initially I thought was burned but now I'm not so sure. Please see image. Is that a damaged section or a product applied on purpose?
I understand, as well, it is adviseable to bypass the protection circuit on these crossovers and I will attempt to do that as well, In spite of my limited skills. Any comments about refurbishing these speakers are welcome.

It's not the clearest picture I've ever seen, but it does look like those resistors have got very hot and the small capacitor looks like it's been damaged from the heat. I'd recommend looking at the other crossover as a comparison.

Those red and black elcaps also need to go - I always replace them.
