B&W DM2 mk2 vs DM4 vs DM5

I have the possibility to buy one of these speakers: B&W DM2 mk2, DM4 and the DM5. I would mainly use them for rock music (like Bon Jovi), which are the best for that kind of music? Other brands and speakers are also a possibility, my budget is around €90 ($100) and they must be bookshelf speakers.

Hi,

Good luck finding those speakers for $100 except perhaps the
DM5. The DM2 is not a bookshelf, neither really is in the DM4.
For a $100 I'd buy the DM2's in a heartbeat.

FWIW the DM5 sounds best inverted, rotate the x/o plate.
(My brother has a pair years ago, pretty good speakers.)

In the Netherlands they all cost around $90 (€80).
I want to put them in a place with a max height of 1 meter so the DM2's would fit, but smaller is better in my case.
Are sound quality wise the DM2's much better then the DM5's?

I liked the DM5's. Never heard the DM2's but at €80 a pair they are an utter no brainer.

As an aside here do you know where I can find information about the DM2 and it's variants? Were the DM2 plagued by any specific problems?
 
I have the 5's. Pretty good all around speaker, but I'd give classical music a slight edge on reproduction. Warning though... If you clip and destroy a tweeter, expect a
tough time sourcing one, or two, and they will be somewhat costly. It would be really hard for me to part with mine, they just sound so nice.

If you want small go for the DM5's. Invert them and put them on good quality stands.
I can't remember whether I added anymore stuffing to what was in there, probably did.

I did add a trap filter to tame the extreme treble peak of the the tweeter, but I was
young, and nowadays I wouldn't be able to hear the peak or the trap filters effect.

I don't recall when I decided inverted sounded better, but you can be sure it did.

My brother was no classical fan, but I can assure you the DM5's were really no
slouches at all when it comes to bashing out more prosaic genres than classical

Mainly due to the fact they were backed up by rather good system for the time,
which I will take all credit for, the rebuilt turntable was an utter boogie machine.

Wish I could tell you something about the DM2's, but I can't, no experience.
Same with all the various versions of the DM4's, which are all good AFAIK.

For vented boxes of the period a favourite tuning trick of mine is port
detuning. A peice of open cell foam port length x 3 port diameter
folded into a tube and inserted into the port, ~ 6 to 9 mm thick.
It will tighten and extend the bass, and reduce port chuffing.
