B&W DM601 S2 Woofer not working

Hi All,

I have a pair of B&W DM601 S2’s that have been over-egged. The tweeters still work on both but no sound coming out of the woofers with no visible damage to the woofers. Could it be that the coil is at fault or is the fact the power is getting to the tweeters mean that the woofers need replacing? If so is there anything that can be done to repair them?

You would have to pull the woofers out and for a start check them with a DMM to see if the voice coils are open circuit.


If they are open circuit the voice coils have been burnt out and either need replacing which may be able to be done at a specialist speaker repair shop or the whole speaker driver replaced. B&W made these drivers and I doubt they would have replacements in stock as they a pretty old by now, you would have to find some on eBay etc. The B&W part number for the bass unit is ZZ11428.

I have a pair of 601's and the wire worked off the terminal on one woofer. I crimped connector and reattached and all was well. I check the other one and it too was very loose. Did the same. Been fine now for over 15 years.
 
Note that to pull the woofers, you first need to remove the plastic baffle on top of the wood. To do that, remove the screws underneath the rubber cups that hold the grill in place. You can carefully remove the rubber cups with needlenose pliers.
 
Thanks for the replies. Have no problem getting the woofers out of the cabinet so I’m looking to follow the advice from HypnoToad - don’t have a DMM to hand so just need to locate a battery to test, and then wait to get to a specialist!

You can also test the woofers by momentarily connecting each terminal to the top and bottom of a AA or AAA battery. As you connect it you should see the woofer move either in or out. Reverse it and it should move in the other direction. If it doesn't move, it's likely that the woofer is dead.
