B&W DM604 S3 tower speakers, need info

Hi,

A local guy is selling a pair of these Bowers & Wilkins speakers for $600 and I don't know if that's a deal or not... of all the speaker brands out there.. I probably know the least about Bowers & Wilkins speakers.. seems like no one ever talks about them.

so if anyone can share some info on these towers or about B&W in general. i'd be very appreciative.

How is the B&W brand name viewed in the big picture of speakers? I am interested in these for a 2 ch system.

$600 sounds like a ok price (but not a big bargain) if it's in good condition. i think they sold for around $1500 new. couple of my friends have these or similar model b&w speakers - mostly used as home theater set up, but should be great for 2 channel set up, too. for classical and jazz music, bass sounded too boomy. depending on what type of music you listen to, those can be excellent speakers. b&w speakers are very well built and usually have great dynamics with excellent transparency. they have a lot of characteristics - so i think you should give it a listen. if you like the sound, the price of $600 is ok. nevertheless, for $600, there are countless awsome vintage speakers you can buy according to your taste.
 
he is also selling a pair of the next step down B&W speaker... which is the DM603 s3 which some people are saying doesn't sound as boomy bass. some people seem to like the 603's better from what i've read. I will hopefully get to check both pair out if they are still available.
 
gogofast, can you or anyone else reading this recommend any other towers in the same $600 price range? I am open to vintage as well as non vintage speakers. but for my $600 i know I am buy more speaker if it's older as opposed to new(er) for the same amount of money.

I was thinking Klipsch Forte or Chorus II's. but i am way open to any and all suggestions.

Have you tried any Polk Audio stuff? The LS 50 and RT2000 come to mind.:scratch2: They make decent speakers and I bet you could find some reasonably priced towers.:thmbsp:
 
YamahaFreak, ummm. yeah i am very familar with Polk Audio speakers.. having just sold my SDA SRS"s two weekends ago... huge vintage speakers. I also have a couple Polk monitors, and RTi series of speakers.

It's time to move on from Polk and venture out into the big scary world of other speakers. ;)

can't go wrong with decent vintage klipsch's - i would suggest cornwall or older heresey's (for around $600). personally, i found them to have little harsh upper range for long term listening, but when matched with nice tube amps, they sound amazingly good. also, a few JBL models like L-100, L-112, or Jubal falls into your price range and can hadle any type of music. for newer speakers, paradigm towers have excellent sound quality with tight bass i liked alot. all really depends on what type of music you listen to and what amps you have.

Wow, I didn't know you could get the Jubal for under $600.:eek:
