BA-3000 upgrades?

Replace TR08 with MJE15030G and TR09 with MJE15031G, available at Digikey. The basing is different so pay attention when you mount the new transistors, The new ones, looking from the front, with the writing facing you, are BCE.
There are 2 transistors on their own small heatsinks. You should replace them as well. That will be TR04 and TR05. Replace TR04 with 2SA914, replace TR05 with 2SC1953. these also have different basing and it may be difficult but not impossible to mount them on the heatsinks. Also available at Digikey.

Would 2SA11230RACT-ND work or would it just pop from too much power? It looks to be the closest thing they have.

Those two transistors are 2SA818 and 2SC1628, and Sansui used them in almost all amplifiers as predrivers, I know they used them in G8000/9000, AU9900/11000, AU20000... so Warren, because I have NOS 2SA818 and 2SC1628, should I replace those two 2SA818 and 2SC1628 with two NOS, or with Fairchild KSA1142 and the KSC2682 as EchoWars recommended? I am asking you this because I already have those Fairchild transistors.

The answer to your question is yes on all counts, but I don't think it is necessary to replace the green Mylar caps and ceramics. I have not seen them go bad in this amp.

The Fairchild ones Kale mentioned are for TR08 and TR09 which you already mentioned replacements for that Digikey carries:

MJE15031G

It's the TR04 replacement that I am unable to find.

im a newby at this and very interested in what youve had to say regarding caps as im trying to recap an au11000. because i cant work out where the signal path is would it be safe to replace all the electro caps with audio grade types & all the small ceramics & greencaps with polypropylene.i live in a small country town in australia and there is no-one with any know how around here,could someone set me on the right road thanks. regards, redrooster.

I would say yes as well, and I have done this very thing on an AU-11000a with good results. I did not replace any ceramic caps, however - just the (most of) green mylar ones with the Panasonic ECQ-P(Z) polypropylene.

What a great sounding amplifier! I sold mine when I bought the BA/CA-3000 and sometimes I regret it! The tone controls are kind of a pain to get in and recap.

About the basing being different, I think what I did was to turn the heatsink around and cut off the securing pins on the heatsink that go through the board.

While my amp was visiting Echowars I put an AU 7500/TU 7500 in the rotation.
Sounds just as good to me.

IMO, don't mess with a good thing. I haven't replaced anything but the electrolytics in my amp and I love the sound. I wouldn't touch it.
 
I never used to touch the green mylars in my equipment. Then I saw that japanese amp8 website in which he tests the green mylars in a Sansui CA-3000 and they are all pretty out of whack. It was at that point I decided to replace green mylars with the ECQ-P(Z) polypropylenes, but only in units that I felt were really worth while, as the 'increase' in sound quality would most likely only be seen by my oscilloscope and not my ears.

I do not have a capacitance meter so I do not know for sure, but taking them out and testing them one at a time probably takes more time than just replacing them outright if you have the caps sitting around.

Those little caps are not cheap though, so it could cost a small fortune if there is a lot of mylars in your gear.
 
How many are in the BA-3000 and how much do they cost?

The individual caps range between $0.25 and $2.00 each.

I will get an accurate count/cost together for you once my digikey package arrives and I go back under the hood. At the current time I am not sure how many there are. Being just a power amp, though, there are not too many.

Doing this to a pre amp will take a nice bite out of a wallet :sigh:
 
I made a list of all the suggestions and opinions submitted on this thread and took them to my local tech. He is a great guy and very experienced, but maybe not as familiar with Sansui specifically like some of the techs out there. But, he is local and shipping this amp is like mailing a bag of concrete (expensive). I'll update when it's done and back on-line. I know Duffs curious about the cost verses benefit also. Thanks for all the input.

Replaced the four transistors and two trimpots on the driver board tonight. It went pretty smoothly. I didn't even need to touch the large heat sink for TR04 and TR05 - I was able to do the "twist" on the legs to get them in the proper orientation.

Time to dial in the bias and offset.

FYI, check out my F-2507. It doesnt look anything like the service manual (or your photos).

Weird.
