Bach trumpet.

[catman]

G'day all, I've been listening to various vinyl recordings I have of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto's this morning and the rather high pitched sound of the Bach trumpet is a rather curious but endearing sound.

I can't recall hearing it much elsewhere except perhaps on the Beatles 'Penny Lane'. :scratch2: Any comments? Regards, Felix aka catman.

That´s a piccolo (small) trumpet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piccolo_trumpet . Maurice André was my favorite player of this instrument:

I believe the part is more correctly played on an F trumpet, which is valveless. The part was originally written for the clarino, which faded into obscurity centuries ago.

See the notes for Concerto #2 here:

and info on the instrument itself here:

Use of the piccolo trumpet is a modern adaptation, done for convenience.

G'day all, thanks for that. It certainly is an intriguing sound played so high. Regards, Felix aka catman.

Yes, it is... and can be hard on the ears if not played well and in a good acoustic environment, or if the player is having an off night. It's interesting that such an inspiring composition was written by Bach in a more secular situation as opposed to being primarily intended for religious gathering as was the case with a lot of baroque era music.

...and not just on Bach. MA made every trumpet concerto better.
