Bought the TU-217, AU-217 and SC-1110 when I was 18 and still have them. Had no clue their were loyal Sansui followers until recently (yes been living under a rock :p: ) have always wanted the AU-517, AU-717 and AU-919 and will probably buy one soon.
What would be a good receiver/amp to get that's not too expensive for recapping practice?
A sight called "The Best of Sansui" has alot of good pics and info was wondering what you guys thought are the Best of Sansui.

The Au-217 would be a fine candidate for a first cap replacement. The Best of Sansui site is OK but no where near as active as this forum.

Heavy-D welcome to AK.

Here is another good Sansui site for reference. Not all models are shown but there is a half decent library.

For what you can't find in the other sites AK will be the place to ask. As for the "Best" it will depend on who you ask. But the AU-717 and AU-919 in that series is highly coveted and great examples of Sansui's offerings.

Good luck and have fun!

which to get?

It is a matter of taste, I like the AU 999 for the amp, maybe put it with the Tu 517, which is nearly the same as the 717 and lots less $..the matching TU 999 is decent as well...
Another favorite is the lowly AU 555 and TU 666 combo, those round dial tuners are great looking and solid if not outstanding performers. Maybe look around a bit and see what you find.
The very best at that level is the AU 9500 in my opinion, hard to find the matching tuner TU 9500...

Thanks for the input! Still researching and will probably buy some just for the hell of it.
BTW the AU-217 still sounds good when heard through efficient speakers.

Just an opinion, an amp will be a bit easier for you for a first cap job. I've been into the insides of most of my receivers and can say that I am glad that I chose my SA 9500II to be the first to recap. Everything is much more accessible than any of my receivers. Have fun but take your time and take lots of before pictures,it might save your butt.

As stated many times in other threads, I have an AU-317 combo that my father purchased new in 1978 that still rocks the house. These little Sansui's were super effecient and get the most out of every single watt.
