Bad popping left channel - HELP!!!

Hey guys, I'm new to AK (although I read forums and threads here regularly). I thought I should make an account because I'm having a HUGE problem. Any help is beyond appreciated, I'm going out of my mind here.

I'm using a Kenwood KR 6600, and lately it's been giving me some trouble.

There's a long story behind this, but the bottom line is this:

My left channel pops EXTREMELY loud, to the point where I can't use my stereo.

At first I thought it was my turntable, because I only noticed it while playing records. Then I started hearing on my CD player and auxiliary input. So I cleaned everything, all the inputs, changed cables, no dice. Figured it was my speaker on the left side. Swapped the speakers, no dice. Still popping. Started hearing it in my headphones a day later, so if it's not speakers, and it's not the inputs, I narrowed it down to the balance knob. I can turn balance all the way to the right, no issue. As soon as I turn it completely left, it starts to pop again.

So a little side note before I get too far. This popping sound is unlike any pops I've heard before. It sounds like a cap gun (those little toys we used to play with as kids). It's LOUD.

I don't really know where to go from here. I've dusted and dusted this thing for about 3 weeks now, I got inside the balance knob electronics and dusted some more. I've done all I can think of. Now I need some real help.

Anything will be greatly appreciated. I really love this receiver and I don't want to get rid of it, but I feel like it's coming to that point.

Sounds like the balance knob's potentiometer (pot) could maybe use some Deoxit. Spray some in and move the knob back and forth a few dozen times. That'll run you about $15 on Amazon for the spray bottle. If that doesn't solve it (or help), the issue is more serious. Unfortunately, I'm thinking it's a more than a pot.

There's a thread on how to use Deoxit in the "General Audio Discussion" section if you need more guidance.

That's a nice receiver and I'm sorry to hear it's giving you issues. I have the next model down, the KR-5600, and the next version of that, the KR-5030, and those are sweet receivers.

I am sure the pots need service, but a shot sound when no control is being exercised is endemic of one or more failing transistors.

Research prior restoration threads for lists of problematic parts.
