Baldwin Organ Parts

Horn Head

Super Member
Just acquired several components from an old Baldwin Organ from about 1964 I believe....(based on speaker date codes).

Big 3 channel amp with 4 x 6BQ5 PPP for pedals, 2 x 6BQ5 PP for keyboard, and 2 x 6BQ5 PP for the rotor speaker. Monsterous PT and very large OPTs - one big one on top of chassis for the PPP output and two slightly smaller ones underneath for the other two PP ouputs.

Tone generator board is chock-full of 12AU7s, and the smaller chassis is filled with 24 x 12AX7s.

Bonus was the speakers...1 x 15" Jensen C15N and 2 x 12" Jensen C12Ns.

Anyone have a schematic for the Amp?...believe it's a Baldwin 46H.

I see the makings for several sweet sounding guitar amplifiers! Just need to order a few hammond chassis boxes from AES and your ready to go...

Yeah, was about to drop that 15" into an old Altec 816 cabinet to sell at our yardsale next week. But will probably save it now knowing it was supposedly used in those big Ampeg bass amp cabinets back in the day. May likely use it for a bass rig.

C15N would also be correct for a big tuck 'n roll Kustom. Very loud, with lots of "bark" in a bass rig. I recall Jensens are "bass light" compared to the equivalent JBL and CTS drivers. C15N Fs ~77hz, Qts ~1.0, >97dB. Would be awesome as a Bassman-style guitar speaker...

Bet you could whip up some Fender tone-stacks and overdrive front-ends with those spare ax/au tubes...some more PTs, and you've got a nice stack of amps.

Or skip the guitars and build a 2.1 hi-fi system. But guitar amps are probably where it's at...

A great pickup, given that many Baldwin 46 organs didn't have the banks of 12AX7s for tone generation. They quickly went to 12AU7s. And the Jensens are a nice bonus. Whether they sound better than some of the competition is debatable, but that doesn't matter; guitar enthusiasts love their OEM Jensens, so those speakers are much easier to move.

Those green Baldwin 6BQ5s are actually re badged Sylvanias and quite nice tubes.
What is the color of the logo on the 12AX7s and where were they made? I had a bunch of blue ones I think were Raytheons, but I'm not certain.

Logo color on all tubes is green.

6BQ5s say: Made in U.S.A. APG Then three numbers stacked; starting from top: 34, 15, 22

12AX7s say: Made in U.S.W APG Then 3 # stacked: 34, 11, 13(?)

12AU7s say: Same as above except one number: 34

5U4GBs say: Made in U.S.A. ADR then 3 #s: 34, 15, 22 but all written on the plastic base. Only thing on the glass is the 5U4GB U.S.A.

EDIT: And, all those 12AX7s have what looks like orange paint dabbed on the top. The others don't. Hadn't seen orange tops like that before...

Well the 6BQ5s are definitely Sylvania as you read those number down not across. It's not 34,15,22; it's 312, 452, with 312 being the code for Sylvania.

I checked out eBay and al the sellers there are saying that the green labels are Sylvanias.

The orange tips may denote organ installs; I've heard that red tips are computer installs, as opposed to audio or other OEM installs.

This link indicates that they were selects for low microphonics...

Dooah! Another way to view the matrix.....thanks for the heads-up on those numbers.

Guess I should reread that algebraic structures book again from college days. Then again, maybe not. Hated that class. Think I got a C......never got to run the world though.

Interesting about the low microphonics deal. Should be good for slammin loud guitar amp front ends.

Inserted a couple of those 6BQ5s into a recapped RCA SE hifi amp....and sounds great! Less muddy in the low end than the RCAs that were in there since the early sixties. They're really clean (sounding).

Noted that the 6BQ5s have tan 'paint' on the tops.

Next to try out those AX7s with the orange paint on something....

And, stuffed that 15" Jensen into an Altec A7; sounds much better than the no-name thing that's in there now (looks like an EV copy). Was a bit surprised. Ain't no 515 but decent. Looking forward to what it'll do in a straight bass guitar cab.

Hi, I have the same amp that was told was from a Baldwin 46C along with the two C12Ns and the C15N. The 6Bq5's are also dark green tipped.
The 12AX7's are red tipped with a light blue(or grey?) label made in Japan. The 12AX7's were tested in my recapped Fisher and sound fine.
If you come across a schematics for this amp or a restoration video on the web, please let me know. I wish I could figure out how to power this amp up and test it.
Thanks for any help.
