Baltimore CL: IRS Gammas 2000.00

Ok Infinity lovers!

What you have here is what we used to call "The one Box IRS-Beta".

Instead of 4 towers, two with 4 12" woofers, and a pair of LEMIM drivers per side as the Betas, the Gammas are one box, 2 12" woofs per side and one LEMIM panel.

Nice thing with these is the ability to drive them with a single amp, however it had better be of exceptionally high quality.....Threshold, Pass Labs, Krell Levinson Classe or so forth.

Or:

The Gamma system includes the Servo EQ box, and you may biamplify these with a good SS amp on the bottom, and tubes up top. using the Servo box also extends the LF response down to slightly below 20Hz.

"If" these are in as good condition as the seller states, they WILL blow away the RS2.5, RS4.5 RSIb, RSIIb and so forth. The IRS Betas and IRS 5's are the only true better Infinity than these.

I owned a pair, used them for rear surrounds along with the IRS Betas I still have. When I sold them a guy from Dallas TX drove here to Mass to buy them and pick them up. They are THAT good....."IF" your frontend and amplifier(s) are up to snuff.

If you have the $$$ and are local to these....I would STRONGLY recommend a look.

Best,

Paul :thmbsp:

Nice...but I'm savin' up for a "pair" of Reference V's.....:D....

Here's a link to Bobby Shred's excellent Infinity page regarding Gammas, with pics and a reveiw. Pay particular attention to the reviewer's statement about electronics for these Gammas, third page, starting about halfway down the center column. True then, and true today. If you feed these Gammas what they need, they WILL blow you away.

CL listing gone....:tears:

Hey Paul,
If I'm ever back up in New England and anywhere in the local whereabouts, can I hit you up for a listen to your Betas???...:D

My fault...

Hello all,

You don't ever hear from me, but I've been lurking for some time. :smoke: I found the Gammas minutes afte they were listed. You may not like it, but I emailed him and told him he was too low on his price and he should also reconsider keeping them.

I owned a pair and sold them recently to a good friend. They are a stellar performer. I was driving the top end with a pair of VTL 225w monoblocks, and their Ultimate Dual Mono Pre, with a Bryston on the lows. Now they have a Bryston and a Mcintosh MC2102 pushing them at my friends home.

Anyway, it ends up the guy was a dealer that sold them originally years back, and re-purchased them from an ex-wife. When we spoke, he reconsidered and decided to keep them for his son later in life. His revelation happened in part from selling some of his own equipment earlier to a stranger. The buyer said (paraphrased) 'The money will last you a month, but you'll miss this equipment forever.'

I did tell him if he was adament about selling especially at that price, that I would post a note on this board, knowing they would go to someone that "understands". I could've bought them and flipped them, but I hate that. It just hurts us all in the long run.

I apologize for being responsible for him taking them off the market, but I think his son will appreciate them long after his father is gone. I've never made that move before, and don't plan on doing it again, so forgive me.

Rick

Well I hate to say it but I was the big loser. I was supposed to go to Baltimore today to pick them up. He emailed me yesterday saying he had changed his mind. Earlier yesterday he had forwarded me Rick's email as "motivation" and I could see the handwriting on the wall. After he emailed to tell me he was pulling them off the market, I responded a bit philosophically and wished him good luck and happy listening. :sigh:

I don't hold it against you Rick, I am sure he would have found out through some other means. But I was surprised he did not know the value of these speakers as he is a high end dealer. Anyway, I am still looking for a pair of "big" Infinitys...

I can't argue with that....

Welcome to AK...Always room for a class act. They would have been tempting if I didn't have so many irons in the fire right now...Sounds like they wound up where they belong anyway...:thmbsp:

I'm hoping to be able to plop down $1200-1300 shipping on a little speaker purchase maybe as early as this weekend. Some of you know what I'm talking about...

And maybe some day I will be able to round up a set of IRS V's...

Remember my motto WRT speakers...THINK BIG!!!!....:D

That was good of you Rick. Your Karma level took a big jump with that call.

I, however... not so much. Anyone have an idea how I can convince this guy to adopt a 46 year old, overweight, father of 5. I would do anything for those Infinities.

K-Man,
I'm really Sorry it was you. When he had initially said they were sold, I hoped it was an AK veteren. FWIW, he waffled around and ended up feeling pretty bad about backing out (remember, I've never met this guy, but he had some interesting stories and a good outlook on life). I honestly don't think we'll see them on the market at a higher value. He's keeping them, which is cool.

He did offer me something that I would expect he would extend to you also considering the circumstances (just guessing on this). He has another buy-back type situation going with a pair of B&W 801 series2 in shipping boxes. He doesn't own them, a customer bought them over a year ago, and the wife said NO, so they've been sitting in his store ever since (they never left:sigh:). The guy asked him if he'd unload them.

I got the feeling he would get them to me for what he could buy them back for. We're going to move pretty soon, so money is kind of tight, and I don't really have the room, so I passed (but didn't want to). I'd be happy to try and get him to extend the deal to you also.

If you're not an 801 guy, again I apologize that you got the short end of the stick (same thing happened to me yesterday on a pair of Forte lls. I actually tried to paypal him over the phone, just so our 'deal' was solid. He backed out when I was driving up, and sold them for more).

I hope all the stereo Gods are happy with the outcome. Btw, didn't I see a pair of Gammas or Deltas on craigslist in Seattle area in the last few weeks as well?

Rick

Rick, I understand and its ok. In fact, I am with you, I hope the guy keeps them as opposed to putting them on Ebay or A'gon with a big price tag. I did speak with him on the phone and he seemed like a decent guy. He did mention he was a little conflicted about selling them.

I appreciate your offer to help with the 801s but I have had a pair and while I like them, I am always going to be a dipole/panel speaker kind of guy.

In the past year I have been close to a number of deals involving RS-4.5s and RS-1bs and each time the deals fell trhough. I found one guy who was selling a pair of RS-1bs on the Phoenix Craigslist for $500! I pleaded with him to consider shipping them and he almost went for it when someone local showed up and bought them!

Sooner or later I'll get a pair of "big" Infinitys!!

Regards,
Keith
