I've yet to hear a pair, but used Vandersteens come to mind, for some reason.

Good luck in your search!

Interesting that you want speakers that go "low low", when your genre of choice is classic rock. In most rock the source of low frequencies is a bass guitar. Just about any ported speaker system will do a good job.

When you listen to classical music or jazz, the source of low frequency is double bass and this instrument can get really looooooow. It's hard to beat acoustic suspension, when you want depth in the bass line.

Acoustic suspension classic speakers are all over the place (AR, KLH, Advent, Cambridge Sound, Allison, etc.)

Regards,
Jerry

PS: My favorite = AR-3a's

I guess I should have described it as slam, you know that feel it in your chest kinda slam.Owned a pair of cornwalls loved the slam didnt care for the horns.thats the kinda thing I am looking for

AR-91s -- update AR-3a, three-way sealed speakers. 12-inch woofer, dome mid and tweeter. Best tight bass in this price range and I'm comparing it to ported JBLs.

4-ohm impedance, though, so you have to have at least a quality 100wpc-plus amp/receiver to get them to push you back -- you have that. I run mine off a Carver M-1.5 amp.

Your HPM-100s will whimper in pain when you bring these in <G>

JBL 240Ti? You might be able to find a pair in this price range, if you are willing to accept a little less than 'factory fresh' cosmetics. Definitely are THE SHIZNIT for classic rock, if you want something a little more "laid back" in the mids...

Regards,
Gordon.

Maybe not quite as low but much tighter bass would be some ADS L810's. Or maybe even some ADS L1290's for your price range. I had some HPM 100's and L810's at the same time and I thought the L810's were quite a bit better sounding. You give up a little extension for much better bass overall.

JBL Century 100's fit that price range, def tons of bass, and are hard to break. I crank em up with a Kenwood KA-907 + L-07 monoblocks and no problems yet.
