John Bonham on Barriemore Barlow:
"the greatest Rock Drummer England ever produced"

I found this quote on the site Drummerworld .

Being a big Tull fan , my favorite drummer was always Mr Barlow although Doane Perry is no slouch . I just found this interesting . That is all.

Wow....seeing that name in a AK thread title certainly caught my eye. As a young drummer I cut my teeth on early and mid 80's metal....Maiden, Metallica, Dio, Ozzy, Crue, etc. But when I listened to the radio (Q102) I got a much more diverse rock selection and heard plenty of Tull...both old and new (I remember "Farm on the Freeway" being in rotation and I LOVED it...BIG drum sound and all).

I think "Aqualung" might have been one of the first "classic" rock songs I tried to figure out. I didn't have it on tape at first and when it came on the radio I'd drop what I was doing and run to my kit and crank it up and start playing along. Eventually I taped it and learned it properly (took me forever to breakdown and figure out the sticking for the sextuplet roll Barrie uses to lead into the fill going into the outro). And I think between trying to cop Mitch Mitchell and Barriemore I was forced to pick up some jazz elements. Yep, great drummer. Best rock drummer England every produced? Looking back with forty years of perspective....Bonzo. Moonie best exemplified the manic, cartoonish fiend behind the kit, but Bonzo had it all...groove, touch, style, flash, chops, taste. He was the man. Cozy Powell probably second.
