I recently bought some NOS BASF LP35 tapes, and also have acquired a couple of used ones. I find the inner plastic gizmos that enclose the tape to be a royal PITA. Is there *any* reason to keep using them?! The tapes are going into the plastic outer case, after all, so that keeps them protected from dust.

I will admit that I continue to use the polyethylene bags for the Maxells that I have, as they are bog-simple to use, but these BASF things are highly annoying . . . unless someone convinces me otherwise I am leaning toward pitching them.

Yes they are annoying. I keep them for extra protection, but I think it's more force of habit.
 
I threw most of the clamshells on my BASF tapes out almost 40 years ago. I recently bought some used but most of the "clamshells" broke trying to get them off. The Maxell bags I still use them if they are still there but I really wonder how much good they really do. I have over 25 BASF tapes with and without clamshells and 125 Maxell tapes with and without plastic bags and cannot really tell the difference. I think keeping them in the boxes when not in use is really all that is needed.
 
I imagine the bags were used to moderate the temperature changes that can occur when product is moved from cold to warm environments, to minimize condensation.
 
Those clamshells are a real pain...I used to throw them out 30 odd years ago but now ...hating throwing anything out that has to do with classic/vintage audio I have kept the ones I have recently acquired. Please tell me I should toss them!!!:tears:
