Bass and Treble bring on the static

Hi all, I am new and trying to get a recently acquired Zenith Y960 working again. Sound comes out of right speaker just fine, but the left emits sound at a very, very low volume. If I try to adjust Bass or Treble very loud static kicks on and I have to power off the whole unit. Thoughts?

I have reviewed this but my tuner is difficult to remove and I’m not sure how to go about removing it. It doesn’t look like it will lift out easily even after removing the four screws holding it in place. I also see soldered connections that would have to be undone.
And? Going to have to remove it if it needs actual repair anyway.
What were you expecting? Mine had this problem so I hit it once on the top and twice on the side and it cleared it right up?
What's the difference between a hobby and a job? you get paid for the job.

I know nothing is ever easy, but I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew with this one. Got two other hobbies already, one is the truck in my avatar and the other is a 1970 Camaro. This Zenith may just become a piece of furniture for now and that’s that.

Thanks!

You can do this.
My local music store has Deoxit, give it a shot on top and give it a whirl.

Caig Deoxit for switches only. Do NOT use on potentiometers (ie volume, tone controls) - they can be ruined.

For pot controls use Caig FaderLube.

I have Deoxit, but since I cannot remove the tuner/preamp I can’t see what I should be spraying. I have cleaned up the control knobs as best I could.

You could always connect the speakers to a system sitting on the top of the console.

AS I said in your other thread, everything unplugs, you can then lift out the tuner/preamp from the top after removing the screws. You may have to have someone push up slightly from the bottom
while you lift it out from the top.

I will try to remove the tuner this weekend when I have some free time.

Thank you orthophonic and larryderouin for your advice and patience.

If you can work on vintage cars then you can work on vintage gear (at least assembly and disassembly). So go slow and good luck.

I have to work on a modern audi that broke half (that's right half so it got me home) of a serpentine belt and I have to take the whole front end off. I with is was a 70 camaro as it would be done already. Why am I doing it myself, I got quoted 1400 for belts and a water pump (pump hides like it's shy or something behind all the belts, and plastic impellers were made to fail).
