Earlier this year I had the pleasure of helping a buddy put together a dream system. Upon completion it sounded (and felt) stupendous! However... I knew my buddy had extra audio equipment that had not been utilized yet.
A huge twist was that to the right and behind his main right speaker was a mostly covered solid cinder block wall. Or so I thought. He showed me that the wall pivoted on a steel post AND behind it was a room roughly 4 foot deep by 12 feet wide and 7 feet tall. The pivoting section being about 8 feet wide and 6 feet tall.
Consider he was already using a pair of Klipschorns as mains, another newer pair of large Klipsch's towers as rears and a 15" powered Klipsch sub in the main listening area. After some thought I asked him if he had another high quality sub at least equal to the one already in the system. He did...
We proceeded to put the other powered sub in that room, wire it up, adjust the positioning (of the sub and the pivoting wall) the best we thought it could be and turned on the system. It sounded terrific! We played more with placements of sub, levels and wall and got a subtle but very noticeable extension in the system.
It seemed to smooth out the bass response throughout the long narrow room. I only wish I had a good spectrum analyzer and mic/recorder system to capture the measurements. The room itself being roughly 12'x30'x7'.
He has had many people audition his system with all of them leaving astonished at what can be accomplished with the combinations of equipment, positioning, settings and that semi secret room, sub and pivoting wall.
