Beatles in Mono

Well, I got a nice red MONO Odeon copy of "Hard Days Night." Gotta find time to listen to it. I hope I'll be able to upload it. :)

the red monos are the best monos I have heard so far.....

the US releases made by Capitol records (most were pressed at the Capitol Records Scranton, PA plant), sound compressed and lifeless after listening to the UK monos or the JPN red MONOs.

Have these old mono Beatles tapes, still play decent and kind of nice to hear the actual original recordings. The Album is a late 60s German record in the crude stereo that was available at that time. Is neat to hear the instrumentals and voices separated, not so great for actual stereo listening though.

Not sure if this was mentioned in this thread but how are the Japan mono parlophone pressings from 2003?

If You mean first four albums (PPM, WTB, AHDN and BFS) early 2000's pressings - AFAIK any Beatles LP release starting 1987 and up to 2009 remasters released on LP's in 2012 (stereo) and also 2014 remasters (mono), used same 1987 CD masters anywhere in the world, including Japan. If You like this kind of sound (I don't) much easier and cheaper to find 1987 CD's.

I had trouble deciphering your initial sentence, but just wanted to point out that the 14' Mono albums were 100% analog.

Don't own a CD player but the 2003 Japan mono ones say this on the back. I imagine they will sound very good.

Hahaha! Hey Frank, that's funny......we seem to have similar taste in Beatles music! Here are my picks from that 2014 MONO set:

These are the ones I bought (although I'm regretting not buying 'Beatles for Sale':

Please Please Me (Mono)
Help! (Mono)
Rubber Soul (Mono)
Revolver (Mono)
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Mono)
Magical Mystery Tour (Mono)
The Beatles (Mono)

Should have bought the Mono boxed set when I had the chance, although I'm cackling like a madman when I see how much my Bowie Five Years boxed set is worth these days...

Of course, they were. What I was trying to say, is that between 1987 and 2009 anything Beatles released on LP used same 1987 digital masters that were used for first release on CD (1987). That includes 2003 release.

The only other copy of "Hard Day's Night," is a 1987 re-pressing by Mobile Fidelity. It is in stereo. UNFORTUNATELY, I cannot upload any Beatles songs to YouTube (strict copyright). :( Therefore, in my listening and opinion, both are great LPs. The Mofi is slightly cleaner sounding (between instruments). The Odeon is warmer, more "tubey" sounding.

Sounds pretty good to me, I would say good enough. As well as 1981 reissue which was made from the same stampers.

Of course I would like to compare them to Japanese 1982 and 1986 monos, but most likely it will never happen. They were always pretty expensive and current rising all the time prices don't give any hope.

I wished I could have posted a couple of uploads. The different pressings do have their own unique sound.

Question to the knowledgeable folks:

Hard Days Night….United Artists, pressed by Columbia Records…Is in stereo. Were those tracks “electronically re-channeled for stereo,” or were they re-recorded in studio for stereo for the soundtrack album?

Curious.

When I listen to the MoFi stereo pressing... it sound like the mono master was electronically re-channeled for stereo.

I’ll look again on my United Artists copy. I’m not sure it says. Was just curious. Thought maybe someone might have the back story.

I’ll have to start looking for a good reissue of the Beatles mono sets. I’ve come to really enjoy listening to mono records on my GE VRII Golden Treasure cartridge.
