Similarly, I’ve gone the band for the buck route, with a large amount of used and/or diy gear. It feels good to listen to speakers or an amp and say “I made that.”
I find for me anyway, the older I get, the less I worry about chasing the perfect sound and just enjoy the music on just about whatever I can listen it on.
Don't get me wrong, I still love a great system, but these days I'm just happy to get a chance to sit and listen.
Mostly, in the case of the heavily modded LaScala clones I made, months of research, modeling, simulations and parts collection, followed by a solid 2-3 weeks in the wood shop, then more time with REW sweeps to sort out the crossover and alignments
To me, 'the Secret' to 'being satisfied' is knowing & getting the equipment you really desire, that you can afford, & it all functions "as designed" & sounds great.' Done.
Is there better sound out there? 'Of course there is.' But what you Have is great!
Then, just forget about the equipment and just enjoy your music.

I love greatsound but I 'do not chase the perfect sound'. I'd rather just enjoy what I have.
