Belt replacment on BSR automatic Turntable?

Hi folks,

My sister has a vintage all in one Zenith Wedge stereo system. The Turntable is not working. I figure the belt is rotted. The problem I am having is I cannot get the platter off to get to the belt for replacement. The spindle is locking the platter down. If I could remove the spindle the platter would come off. It looks like there is a small retaining ring holding on the spindle. The spindle is the kind where you can stack several records on and have them drop as each album is done playing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Remove the lock ring an then drip some liquid wrench or sewing machine oil around the spindle. Come back in hours or days and you should be able to pull the spindle out and than the platter.

How do you remove that lock ring? I tried prying it up and that did not work.

That ring is probably a 'C'-clip.
I know this because ---I now feel the need to admit something.
My 1st 'table was a BSR.

That was a monkey off my back.

These larger 'C' -clips must be manuvered a bit sideways just before you lift up, as the center of the clip has a point that probably grips into the groove on the shaft. So, it grips at three points.

Yep...a C clip...slide it out with a small screwdriver, then lift it up out of the way.

Spindles don't keep platters on. "C" clips do. Remove this with a jeweler's screwdriver or similar. If the platter remains stuck, the grease has hardened between shaft and bushing. Apply heat from a soldering gun to the main platter bearing while a second person pries the platter upward using two flat-bladed screwdrivers shoved under the platter on opposite sides. Do not use a heat gun or blowdrier to do this, as it will destroy the rubber mat, or if the platter's plastic, the platter itself.
