The Parasound 2200 II should also be considered. Can be found for 500.
I'll contribute to this conversation but wasted communication to OP.
In the ~200 watt/ch amp range I've owned POA2200 and 2400, Carver TFM25, Phase Linear 400.
Order of preference is:
1. Phase Linear
2. Carver
3. Denon
Denon is best built, best specs as listed on paper. Funny how that works.

Crown makes some nice Class-D stuff that runs in your price range.
If you’re lucky, the Yamaha P2200 with meters, P2201 without are quite good but may need some refurbishment. These don’t have speaker protection though.
Same goes for the later PC2002/PC2002M (metered) which do have speaker protection and in my experience are pretty robust if properly working. Fully refurbished they are almost bulletproof.
Each sounds very smooth with plenty of power reserve, most were probably used in studio support applications or sound and theater applications so be sure to get a service and operational history before any purchase. Many other later Yamaha professional power amps are also nice sleepers in power, sound, and size, having gotten smaller and lighter with fan cooling.
All our recommendations should include photos because besides great sound, big amps should also look great too!

I know this is an very old thread but I think the info. within is still relevant and these old amps are still outstanding once they are serviced and rebuilt properly.
So with that, I must ask if you have a choice between a Hafler P500 (pro version of a DH-500) and a Yamaha PC2002M for the same money which would you choose and why?
To elaborate, I'm actually looking for a good pairing for my Magnepan LRS. I've heard that the Hafler Mosfet amps are a good match, but have never heard or used Yamaha Pro amps like the PC2002 or PC2002M even though there are some good recommendations.

Adcom GFA-555 II. and don't look back. A very good amplifier of those listed. The Yamaha P-2200 professional amplifier is very excellent. I like it, and I'm not much of a Yamaha fan. Consider it.

Yamaha Pro PC-2002 or PC 2002M is an excellent amplifier. Should be able to drive 4 ohms, and do OK with Magneplanars.
Thanks for the feedback KenTeffeteller, from what I have read the Yamaha PC2002M is a very good amplifier. What I'm not certain of is the ability to handle the 4 ohm impedance of the Maggies. The original specs do not show 4 ohm WPC ratings, although many users have advised their usage of 4 ohm speakers without problems.
On the other hand, the Hafler is rated at 400 WPC@ 4 ohms so I know it can handle the low impedance without issue.
If I can purchase a Yamaha PC2002M at a reasonable price I may just have to give it a try after a rebuild/re-cap just to satisfy my curiosity of it's capabilities.

Well that could be a down payment on a good amp. Not an excellent one. All of us are going to have wake up one of thes days and realize good components today or any time in the past were not cheap. If they are that cheap today then they weren't that great when introduced new or they would be worth 5 or 6 times that much today. Its isn't whether they work today as new but for how much longer. 100 hours or 1000 if you are very lucky.

My friend had a Yamaha B-2 amp and was truly in love with the meters residual to the fact that he was in FM radio using meters as a tool for his work. And it did sound very nice and heavy at about 66 pounds. As an owner of the ADCOM 555II, i kept trying to get him to try one. A couple of years later, he bought a 5400 and a 5500, both of which drove his Martin Logan reQusests very nicely. It turned out that the lower-powered, but not underpowered 5400 sounds better than the 5500.
As much as i love the sound of ADCOM amps, the preamps are less transparent. I snagged an audio research SP3a1 tubed preamp that took me aback. The ADCOM GFP 565 never re-entered my system.
