Best Beach Boys Song?

It's that youthful tone of his voice that I love so much. Every time I'm reminded of how cool his voice was I get bummed out about the whole Smile thing all over again. Goddammit.

I'm kind of glad it happened the way it did. I never would have appreciated Smile back then. I'm ready for it now. It sure gets a lot of play around here. :thmbsp:

I went through a spell a few years ago where I became totally obsessed with the Beach Boys version of Sloop John B. The production, the singing - everything about it is so perfect. It's almost too good for Pet Sounds.
the singing, mostly. The group vocal performance is one of their best. Brian and Mike switching off verses - this is probably my favorite Mike Love vocal.

You gotta stick with Brian's original mono mix. It's a marvel to listen to - actually two different mixing attempts spliced together (you can hear it happen just before the second verse). Brian gets all those vocals way up, without ever making it sound crowded.

Amen to that.:thmbsp:

It's great when a band makes a cover song their own.

Just to nitpick, recording a version of a traditional song is not generally considered a "cover song".

A West Indies folk song, as we all know.

Thanks for the rankings, dumptruck.

My dad dragged me to see the Kingston Trio in the late 70s. The Kingston Trio had done a 1958 version that was obviously the model for Brian Wilson.

In the concert, the Kingston Trio jokingly accused the Beach Boys of stealing their song.

Played "Wendy" last night. Golly, what a great song.

I dunno, just convention, and it is a record industry term that certainly did not come about to refer to traditional songs, just as it doesn't refer to performances of Mozart. It is about making a version of someone else's record. I said it was a nitpick... For example, does it not seem weird to you to refer to "a cover version of" "Down by the Riverside", or "Black Betty", or "Yankee Doodle"?

So to do a cover of a song, there must be a definitive author/composer who can be credited while a "Traditional" has no author/composer due to age and unknown origins?

OK. Fair enough.

Substitute "their version" or "their rendition" in place of "cover."
