Best Craig's List and Kijiji Scores!

In light of the Craig's list threads we see here, I thought I would post my most recent score on Kijiji Canada, so I searched dollars and sense, but didn't find any such thread. I decided to create a thread on the subject, and hopefully there will be lots of activity. Post your best online shopping scores here!

So here it is, my latest Kijiji Score!

I will start by mentioning a few years ago, I saw an ad for Mackintosh gear for sale, with no pictures. I figured it would probably be outside my audio budget, so I ignored it. The next day, it came up again during a search. I figured I had better ask, even though it was probably way too late by then. So I did, and got a response back. After some back and forth, I went to check the gear out. It seems he had just inherited 3 full vintage McIntosh systems from his uncle. He had some tuners and preamps at this time, and we settled on a price for the three preamps, a C24, a C26, and a C32! It was a very reasonable deal too, because the C24 and C26 were non functioning. I got them home, cleaned them up, and I had two fully functioning preamps, and the C24 was dead as a door nail!

After some sound tests, I decided to keep the C26, get the C24 repaired, and I sold the C32 within 2 days, and got back my full investment! The seller promised to contact me the next time he brought back any of that gear. About a week later, he called me to let me know he had two power amps and a skeleton turntable. So I went over, and the two amps were a mc2505 and an mc2205. I bought the 2205 from him for a very reasonable price, and he promised to let me know when he brought his next load of gear. A little later, he calls me again, and he has a mr74, a mq101, and a Teac tape decompressor. He made me a very reasonable price for the three of them. I sold the mq101 for what I paid for that lot. So in the end, I got a c24, a c26, an mc2205, and the MR74 for a total of $1000 Canadian!

This week, I saw an ad for a MAC1900 and Bose 901 speakers. I decided I should reply, even though it was a little pricey for me, but I figured I might be able to negotiate a better price. First, I needed to see the gear. So I went out on Thursday night and checked it out. The MAC1900 was in immaculate condition! Came with the original double box, and the wooden cabinet, which the seller never mentioned in the ad. The Bose 901s series 3 were also in immaculate condition and the seller started explaining all the work that had been done on them a few years ago. I was initially skeptical about buying them, but when he said the foam had been replaced inside each cabinet, I realized he didn't know what was really done and was describing getting the drivers refoamed. So I started the negotiating process when he asks me if I might be interested in a turntable, CD player or equalizer. I said I might be interested in a turntable. What have you got? He points behind me, and I see a Thorens box. Inside is an immaculate TD-160! We settle on a price and I am now the happy owner of some series 3 901s with the series 3 EQ, a McIntosh MAC1900, and another Thorens TD-160 with an Ortofon cartridge and stylus!

Thanks! My house is undergoing renovations right now so I haven't been able to set everything up. I did try out the Thorens today and it works beautifully, with only a few minor scuffs on the dust cover. I'm looking forward to comparing the ortofon cartridge with the cartridge I have on my first TD-160.

I'm also looking forward to hearing the 901s on my 1801. I had a pair of series 2s that I sold this summer, and I want to hear the differences.

Do we really need a seperate thread for CL/kijiji? Is it not covered by the two threads we already have for thrifts/garage/scores?

WOW.....not in my wildest dreams could I find that kind of gear here.....Congrats!

The "thrift store" thread has kind of become a catch-all for all forms of bargain hunting.

It is a different world, and the caliber of the gear is very different. Don't get me wrong, I love the Best Thrift Store Finds thread, but I never felt I should be posting my kijiji finds there. So that is why I created this thread. But I suppose the forum readers will decide if this thread should die or live.

We see stuff like this periodically here, but you have to be fast! The ad was 9 hours old when I saw it, and I was sure it was gone. I'm thinking because I called and left a message, that I bumped myself to the top of the list.
