Best Direct Drive TT?

The Dual 701 is a beauty.

I nominate the Sansui SR-838. Simply sublime, effortless, musical performance. The Rockport Sirius is probably the finest, but I would need a second morgage to afford one!

Yup, that Sansui SR-838 is one of my favorite TTs. It is also beautiful to look at.

It seems like it would be a perfect match with a BA/CA setup! I'd love to see a pic of that!

I have it paired with a Audio Research PH3 (next to it in the pic) and a Pioneer SX-1980.

BTW, you can see my small tweaks on the picture. The counterweight is wrapped with adhesive putty (similar to blue-tac) to reduce the effective mass of the arm (it sits closer to the pivot).

I also added two granite slabs underneath and there's a bubble level on the plynth, along with my two brushes.

The cart is a Benz Micro Glider M2.

Thanks for not making me be first to sing the praises of the Dual 701. I have 3 and am blown away on how they operate. More importantly, they don't have components that fail like the Japanese tables - that quartz drive stuff.

Wow Crooner, a Sui 838 with a glider and a PH-3, I'd love to hear it. My guess is it's awe inspiring. Not to go off topic, but where did you get the small squares of granite? I'm in the market and I wanna be cheap about it.

Nice touch on the counterweight. Good idea. Anyhow, I gotta say that the 838 is, IMHO, the prettiest tt out there.

I also think the AR-XA is pretty becuase it is a study in asthetic minimalism/functionality. I know there's people who'd disagree, but it is wholly unique.


Once again, my dream would be a BA/CA/838/AR LST/AR 9 setup. Oh where oh where are these paths I that have heard about that are paved in solid gold???

This thing sounds glorious I gotta tell you. I wish you could come to my place and listen to it. Even CD-Rs made of my LPs sound incredible!

The granite squares are just tiles from Home Depot. They sell them individually. About 15 bucks each, IIRC. I sandwiched a couple for the SR-838 using Scotch sticky feet between them. For the PH3, I used a single slab with the little rubber feet underneath. I figured it would benefit from extra isolation since it uses tubes (lower induced microphonics).

I used to have a Marantz 6300 and I didn't like it.... Without servo lock, it's speed always wandered....I was constantly correcting it. It is beautiful though!

I know what you mean, had problems with mine until I learned how to calibrate the speed on the motor itself....About one and 1/2 rotations from a dead stop and it now stays right on.....And It IS beautiful...... :thmbsp:

hi all; Me, i prefer the Technics direct drive Linear tracking turntables...they play the records the way the records were made....and i have found that linear trackers can play scratched and lumpy records that most standard swing tone arm design machines cannot play...works for me..i got two Technics linear trackers....and as a "backup" machine a fine working technics SL-1300...which is basically a 'bullet proof" SL-1200 with auto matic return an shutoff....
