The OP has not been seen since the question was posed... but carry on.
Hmm, nobody seems to have rememberd to take the sloppy-beer-drinkers-and-jumping-dancers-at-party-factor into the advices. This is a teenager and if she goes off to campus there is a considerable risk that this TT will be in a hazardous environment....
He's not the first parent with a teenager who wants a turntable and he won't be the last. Even if he doesn't return, the information in this thread can be useful to others.
It’s like asking what’s the best car to buy for under $18K. I can’t tell you...
So you have used the Fluance and don't think it is "quality"? Servicing old BSRs doesn't tell you about the quality any more than repairing a Pinto tells you about a new Hyundai.
Forgot to add. The Fluance may be better than a Rega Planer 1 but that isn't saying much. I have looked and heard many new budget tables, not impressive. Now your JVC is a keeper. I have 2 JVC TT-71s and I find them very good. How many of the budget tables have you used? That's what I thought.
My daily driver is a JVC QL-A7, but I have used the u-Turn and an RT-81. I found the Fluance to be better than the Rega Planar 1.
I'm not comparing the Fluance to my JVC. I'm comparing it to Crosleys, AT-120s and other crap in that price range. The Fluance will pay respectably and not damage vinyl. For some people that is all they need. I refuse to hold someone to my standard if that isn't want they seem to want. "All audio, no attitude", remember? Besides, I spec gear with my ears. Especially tables. Nobody can hear the difference between 0.06 or 0.09% WF or -58 vs -62db rumble.Forgot to add. The Fluance may be better than a Rega Planer 1 but that isn't saying much. You won't get specs that good with the low end Fluance but they do meet the OPs budget. But I can hear the difference between -78 and -58. Only the best Fluance TTs have good specs the others are a different story but none of the good ones are within the OPs budget. I get it you like some of the Fluance TTs they are popular and have a following. The entry level ones just aren't that good but they do meet the OPs budget. I have to say my comment of the Fluance being garbage was not fair. I removed it.I'm not comparing the Fluance to my JVC. I'm comparing it to Crosleys, AT-120s and other crap in that price range. How about that. Two people on the internet who stared in opposite camps came to a reasonable agreement. Someone should alert the media! Sometimes when I am talking online I can forget that it is real people on the other end of the conversation. I feel much better now that I have admitted I was not nice and we can hopefully be friends. Thank youHow about that.
