Gang-Twanger
Resident Wharfedaliophool
Try and match up the sound of the speakers and the receiver. Synergy is the word. Like Gang-Twanger's The Fisher 800c and Wharfedale W70's. It's a match made in heaven. I don't know how many times I've seen The Fisher and right there will be a pair of Wharfedales. Listen to the fellas here in what worked and what didn't.
I was sitting around with one fella on Friday listening to his The Fisher 500c and Heathkit triaxials. The source was a Otari MX-5050. Amazing.![]()
Yeah, the old Wharfies, especially the ported ones, really love tube power, and the Fisher stuff seems to be a particularly-good match. My alnico W90's and the 800C are a MONSTER combination. Incredible synergy. Even at a whisper, it's enough to give you chills. I recently-made some demo videos of the W90/800C combo using a camcorder with front and side mic'ing (so you get a stereo image), and one of those videos is linked below in my signature.
The oil caps were also a big improvement. Those early, alnico-loaded Wharfies really do seem to prefer oil-filled capacitors, and they really seem to hate metallized polypropylene caps. Compared to a good oil cap, the typical modern poly caps (like Solens and Daytons) are glare city. I wish I knew why, but those poly ones just do not work in those Briggs-era W** models. I can't stress this enough.
Like you said, it's all about synergy, and the old Wharfies, especially the alnico ones, are VERY-synergy-dependent. But once you find that synergy, watch out...
Relaximus has some beautiful W70C's that he runs with one of his equally-beautiful Fisher consoles. Can't get much-prettier than that. And of course Crestwood23 posted his table-topped W90's earlier in this thread, and he has a couple of nice Fishers as well. I got my 800C last fall and couldn't be happier with it (IMO, the tube Fishers are among the best-looking receivers ever made, and certainly among the best-sounding.
And since this is a thread about good-looking speakers, here's a picture of mine.
