Just finished the repair and set up of a gorgeous 4-track AKAI R2R. Does anyone have an idea of a great 4 channel amplifier to mate this up with. I have a 4/2 mixer but it would be fun to drive four discrete channels..

That is pretty cool. I used to have one of those AKAI quadraphonic tape decks. It is often a lot easier to connect two stereo amplifiers, one stereo amplifier for Front left & right and a second stereo amplifier for Back left & right, than it is to find a great 4 channel amplifier.
 
thanks, that's an idea I did consider. I have a couple of Quadraphonic records from a long time ago that might be fun to play, so I'm thinking about a receiver with a decoder now. I also picked up a Pioneer HR-99 8-track so two tape in/out's on the receiver is desirable. I just looked at a Marantz 4240 but with decoder and wood case the price gets pretty high.
