I recently got a set of’82 La Scalas they are original, have AA crossovers and K-55-V midrange drivers. The recommendations for new crossovers seem pretty evenly split between the AA and the AL-3. I believe someone said the AL-3 is better for playing louder. Only one ALK advocate has weighed in. And there’s a couple leave them be and enjoy. I seldom go really loud, 90dB would be fairly “cranked” for me. I’m not likely to replace the tweeters, but damn that aluminum one is sure pretty. I’ll let you know what Crites says when they reply to the same question.

And what tweeter?

The AA is for the K-55-V with spring loaded terminals and the round magnet K-77 tweeter.

AK/AL series of networks are for the K-55-M and K-77-M tweeter.

Based on everything I’ve learned over the last few years from Roy, Jim Hunter and of course Mike - it’s generally a bad idea to mix drivers and networks.

The ALK Universal will work with almost anything because of its ability to rebalance everything on the fly. It’s a smart design, but it’s not perfect - and does have its own, unique sonic signature.

Adding any of new more popular tweeters causes an odd effect with all of these networks - the high frequency response rises with increasing frequency. Summing error at the crossover point also increases.

The ALK can be modded to fix this. The answer for the others is to run the 4500X.

I bought these from the original owners ex they are untouched. Based on your very helpful comments I expect you checked AA or If it ain’t broke. Thanks.
 
I’m such a dolt. I didn’t read your 2nd post. Yeah, if they are running AA’s and haven’t been modded, and you plan on leaving them stock - stay with the AA. If you can’t smell oil or the cans aren’t leaking, just leave them alone - except for maybe a nice clean up job.

No leaks and they passed sniff testing.
