I'm in Anchorage, Alaska and I'm pretty sure that I will need to send them out of state for repairs since we only have 2 stereo/video repair shops here in town. I stopped going to them since every time I go to either of these places, with anything from the 80s, I always hear the same thing "We don't work stuff that old", which is normally followed by "But, we can throw it away for you..." My system is made up of mainly older Yamaha and Denon equipment.
Anyway, I know that most of this work can be done at the "operator's level," but I work about 60+ hours a week, which doesn't leave me much time for anything else.
As for cost, I'm pretty open, as long as its within reason, but at the same time, I really like my processors and would like to continue having them as part of my system since lately, I've been listening to and purchasing more and more albums. With this said, I'm willing to pay most any reasonable price... As long as the work performed is excellent.
Currently, I had to disconnect my dbx processors from my system since they will within a hour or so, will start to effect the right channel. Also, most of these units I've had for 19-20 years now and the lights/meters are starting to fade at different degree.
My "dead" dbx 120X-DS, Subharmonic Bass Synthesizer, which I bought off eBay is cosmetically in good condition, but my other semi-functioning dbx 120X is in very poor condition, but I think the “guts” might be "savable" for this transplant.
I hate to say this, but I’m not an “audio purist,” so my dbx equipment is a must in my system and at least to me these units really improve the sound of albums, tapes, FM broadcasts and my numerous VHS music video tapes. Also, they can soften overly bright/harsh sounding CDs and 12" Laserdiscs too... IMHO!!
BTW, my system is centered around a Yamaha MX-1000, CX-1000. I also have the TX-1000 FM Tuner and a Denon DP-47 Turntable…. As for a CD player, I’m still in the market for either a descent, top-line, Yamaha, Denon or dbx model from the mid 80s to early 90s to round off my main 2 channel, audio system... I had a Yamaha CD-2000 CD Player, but it was damaged beyond repair when I moved from New Jersey back in 2001.
If I can find a place to service these units, I would also like to see if they can service and replace some of the parts on my Akai GX-77 Reel to Reel too!!
