Best speakers dollar-for-dollar?

Sub-$300 [Vandersteen 2s]? Where?:scratch2:

Keep your eyes on Craigslist, the AK classifieds and Barter Town (well worth the $25 annual subscriber fee to get access to this forum). I found a pair of 2Cis for my son on the AK classifieds and paid $200 for them. They were in nice shape overall, and the price included the stands. I discovered a blown tweeter after I bought the speakers and got them home, but Vandersteen rebuilt the driver for about $85 including return shipping, so I still have less than $300 tied up in the pair.

I like Altec A7's and 5's. Very nice imaging and efficiency. I just got some homeade cabs with two 515b's in each one and a EV mid horn (the model doesn't come to mind, but pm new if you want it) and an EV horn tweeter model T-350A both sitting on top. They sound amazing with very little power.

Even though I am an Altec lover, I have to vote for the Electrovoice Sentry III, best bang for the buck, great sounding vintage speakers, i can think of.

Here's my formula for good "bang for buck." Look for speakers that are:

1. Local
2. Huge, impractical to ship.
3. Not yet "collectible."

My IMFs fall into that category, as do full-sized Frieds and TDLs. The Fulton "Modular" system is another, so's the pyramid shaped Sequerra (sp.?) speaker with the ribbon tweeter - there was pair on 'gon locally, for $600, for ages. Some of the older TOL Kefs, too.

How loud so you want to play, and how big an amplifier are you willing to buy?

In this context, probably Open Baffle.

Gotcha... I should have gotten that... Pretty-sure I've ever owned an open-baffle model before (aside from building a cardboard speaker when I was a kid), although I'd love to find a pair of the old Wharfedale SFB's from the late '50's. Sort of an open-baffle (I guess... or semi-open) with a Super 3 tweet pointing upward (I think). They look a lot like a DQ10 (I think this was the speaker that Gilbert Briggs used for his "live vs recorded" demonstrations at Carnegie Hall (Same tweeter he used with the original W** models).
