Best YAMAHA NS-XXXX to work with Music?

Hi guys, I would like to hear from professionals... which are the best speakers (YAMAHA NS) to Equalize, Mixing & Mastering...

I'm realizing that there are many models, I never knew there were so many NS models!

I always knew of the NS-10 and NS-1000 as a very good tool to work with audio, but recently I see that there are many others...

what is the meaning these "X" and "M"

I want the best to work with vintage synthesizers and old hardware and get that unique sound of 80's

I do not want them to "listen" music, I want the best for working with music... that are flat and do not lie in the sound...

I have a pair of NS-590, are great but they are not 100% original

I await for your point view!

Yes, the "M" means "monitor!" And not knowing that does not make you an idiot (although you could still be one, anyway? ).

You may even consider the NS-690, very similar to the NS-1000, easier to find at half the cost. I have just sold my pair, but had the chance to hear them side-by-side with a friends NS-1000's, to my old ears they were a very close match. The friend was equally impressed by them and seriously considered buying them for his home studio.

thank you very much "oldenuff" good info, I live in Argentina, and there are not many speakers of these, did not know the NS-690 for now I'll try to get the original tweeters for my NS-590, will not be easy!!! and begin to raise money to buy a pair of NS-1000M or NS-690 in perfect condition, today is my great desire! thank you!

Yamaha's are my favorites. Here are the ones I have owned and what I think.

NS-10M -- Somehow became industry standard. Terribly bright and with no bass.

NS-200M -- Well built with the similar quality as big brother NS-1000M. The 200M has titanium domes which I find to be less edgy than beryllium. Balance is excellent and with the right amp, bass is "audiophile" tight.

NS-500M -- Be tweeter and Ti mid are a materials mismatch. Be and Ti sound different to my ears and I want consistency in the mid and upper bands.

NS-670 -- Not an M model but shares a lot with the M's. The main difference is the cloth domes which I find to have a relaxed sound. Great for easy listening but also with the same attention to sonic details as the M's.

NS-1000M -- I have five pairs. The Be domes are the big draw for me. With the right amp, you hear everything and then some. You will be on constant alert, like you are critically listening all the time. Interestingly, the 1000M responds very well to tube power.

My only experience with Yamaha speakers was a pair of NS-451s. They were impressive, especially in the bass department. I ended up selling them to a friend, but I kinda wish I hadn't. He had a party at his house not too long ago, and the Yammies combined with Bose 301s filled up his large barn very nicely.

I'll second that. I run a Fisher TA-600 into them, and I'm constantly hearing things I never heard before, on songs I've heard hundreds of times.

The Yamaha NS 200ma to me are a great sounding speaker, So much so in my mind that I have 3 pair of them. The 3nd pair are hybrids. Hard to find . My next choice would be the Yamaha NS 200m. Love their sound which is diffrent from the 200MA's. I have not owned the Yamaha NS 670's long enough to make a suggestion concerning them, I like them but I can not yet describe the sound they produce although they appear to have a warmer sound stage while being able to maintain the same detail as the 200's. At the top of the pecking order for my money are the NS 500m's, the sound is the same as the 200's with a lot more low end. I have never listened to the NS 1000 line and know nothing about them other than their stellar rep. Im lurking. Hide your 1000's.

I have NS1000M's and I have tubes but I've never tried them together. My tube stuff is low power; PP EL84 or SEP amps and the like and figured they wouldn't be a good match. How much tube power do I need? :scratch2: ... maybe in a smaller room.
