Beta preamp for Nikko Alpha 220?

I just received a Nikko Alpha 220 amp (Thanks Quagh!). I like the Nikko "house sound" and would like to purchase a Beta preamp for it. I'm kinda new to separates - how important is it to pair the Alpha 220 with the "matching" Beta 20?

The consensus seems to be that the Beta I, II and III are the Nikko preamps to get. But how successful would a pairing be, with say the Alpha 220 and the Beta II?

If I was to move away from getting a Nikko preamp, what are some recommendations for a budget pre from another company that would pair nicely with the Alpha 220? An at least decent phono pre is a must.

Any beta pre will be fine.
The beta V was the best, but impossible to find. Within Nikko, anytime you see a roman numeral V, that was their best.

My nikko gear is a mix of the toggle (older) and push button power switches so it looks a little goofy. Works fine tho.

I have a Beta 40. It seems to be the best one they made...lots of phono options and decent tone control
