Better antenna reception with coax

I am unsure why my using the coax antenna input gives me better reception than just the two attachment clips on the dipole antenna. I use the Radio Shack transformer balun and I am getting much stronger reception. Not sure why. It's really superior and the meter shows it. Are my solder joints bad in the 300 ohm attachment compared to the 75 ohm attachment? thanks,

Mike

What are you hooking your coax to? Maybe the length alone picks up better. Are you in a compromised area for the dipole?

You are getting an improved impedance match with the transformer in the circuit. No real mystery, but it should not be like that unless the antenna terminals were intended for Coax cables. I have a Sony tuner like that, it has a little metal band near the antenna terminal, it's supposed to clamp down on the shield of a stripped CoAx cable. Anyway, don't worry about it, hook it up which ever way works best.

Picture this. I have a dipole antenna, 4 bucks from Radio Shack. I take the two leads and screw them into the 300-75 adapter so the dipole now feeds into the body of the receiver by way of this adapter-balun. There is NO coax cable involved, just this little transformer that allows plugging the antenna output into the coax jack on the tuna.
My strength of signal meter has gone way up relative to the original 300 ohm connections into the tuna.
Comments are welcome. Ask if it's still unclear, thanks, folks

I believe Ken Bernacky of Stereo Surgeons removed the internal balun. The Sony tuna, the SD-5950, sounds simply luscious through my Triangle Titus 202's. However, since I've done several units with Ken, I could be wrong about this tuna and you could be right on! Thanks, Mike
