Beware the cheap ultrasonic cleaner!

FWIW-

Speaking of which.... there is another US thread over at AA in which Harry Weisfeld (VPI) mentioned he noticed a reduction of high frequencies after US cleaning. Not sure how that was explained (and HW is still championing them) but has anybody else noticed this?

Nope. I read that, too. He claims that in a musical passage, the triangle sound originally sounded like it was 3' away and after a cleaning it sounded 10' away (or something to that nature).

I hope he's not making things up in order to keep sales of vacuum cleaning machines up. There are enough gullible people out there who fall for the fictitious animated graphics pedaling infomercial products.

I doubt it. He stated he has a machine in the works that incorporates US and vacuuming both.

And that isn't really HW's MO, anyway...

One must wear ear-protection when working with these units, or leave the room, which is what I do. The noise these u.s. machines make is very high-pitched and loud, and will eventually cause high frequencies hearing loss, imho. As we get older, we all lose the h.f. hearing. Why precipitate it, when it can be avoided?!

So you're suggesting the machine itself is affecting the user's hearing, rather than it's use affecting the spectral balance of the U.S.-cleaned LP?

I do wear ear protection. I found that regular ear plugs like the ones we have at work are somewhat ineffective for the higher pitched US machines. I use noise cancelling headphones (the ones that fit over the ears) when I use the US machine.
