Beyond KOB...

I had recently gotten serious about the jazz format, and had asked for recommendations regarding the best album to kick off an exploration of this genre -- of course, I was guided by just about everyone here to the legendary Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, so I tracked down and purchased the Legacy 180-gram reissue of the seminal album. I have been vastly enjoying this complex yet relaxing piece of work, especially on Legacy's beautiful-sounding reissue (wish I could say the same about their Journey's Greatest Hits or Michael Jackson Thriller reissues, but those turned out terrible), but I would like to stretch my jazz horizons and begin shopping for new LPs in this format...

I have The Very Best of Diana Krall on CD, which sounds absolutely stunning, but now I think I want to sample perhaps some more Miles on vinyl, or works of other jazz legends...what would be your recommendation for moving beyond Kind of Blue? I kind of prefer the "bossa nova" style of jazz, if that's any help, and as I said have been immensely enjoying Davis' sound.

What would be some recommendations for jazz albums for a genre novice?

A great jumping in point would be Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. They were an institution in jazz for decades. Many fine players cut their teeth with the Jazz Messengers and went on to front impressive careers themselves. The Jazz Messengers catalog will introduce you to many jazz legends and suggest a few directions to veer off into IMO. Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Fuzz

Noted!

Thanks very much Fuzz. :rockon::bigok::beerchug:

When I got into jazz I had no clue, so I just kept looking at the many "greatest jazz albums of all time" lists that are out there, some of those are still among my favourites:

Coltrane - Blue Train
Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out
Lee Morgan - Sidewinder
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus

If you like Kind Of Blue, you'll probably enjoy those as well.

Actually just click on "Today's Jazz Playlist" here in the music forum and you will find 5,380 pages of recommendations! :music:The folks who post in that thread are some very knowledgable jazz fans & we welcome anyone to participate. You will not lack for opinions there.

Since you asked for "more Miles" and you dig KOB, I'd recommend Relaxin' and Workin' from the Miles Davis Quintet. Workin' was my first Miles album after Bitches Brew. But we'll get to Bitches Brew later.

For great SQ, check out Bill Evans Waltz for Debby.

A few more
Midnight Blue / Kenny Burrell
Time Out / Dave Brubeck Quartet
Soul Burnin' / Red Garland trio with Coltrane
THE Shape of Jazz to Come / Ornette Coleman

Those Miles 'apostrophe' albums are gold. You'd have to have a hole in your (jazz) soul to not dig those. Grab all of them @AnzacSonata and you're in for a treat.

My jazz gateway was Blue Train.

And for sure, get on over to the jazz playlist thread. Lots of goodness over there.
One guy who came up as a new-to-him for one member there was Curtis Fuller. Every jazz fan needs some Fuller in the mix.

I probably should have read this closer.

If you decide to go down the path of Mile's Prestige 'apostrophe' albums via vinyl there are a ton re-issue options, from low priced to high zoot.
There are also old re-issiue options worth looking at. The OJC copies are a bargain if you can find them.
And then there's this one(plus a companion set). Horrid covers that make no sense, but the vinyl inside is the good stuff. Savvy jazz vinyl lovers know that it can pay to look at these.

Thank you so much, everyone! It's much appreciated -- I will do my research and check back with any purchases or findings!
