BGW amp 750B anyone familiar with it ?

I may put mine in service just to hear the yarbles it has- then back to the closet till winter. The damn A/C sucks it all for now.

Modification to "Class A"

I've seen references to the 750A being a good base for a Class A modification.
I can't seem to find a clear list of the necessary changes. Anyone?

anyone ever heard the difference between bgw 750 and phase linear 700?
Yes, the 750 continues to make blissful sounds long after the Blaze Linear does it's impression of a smoke machine.:smoke:

Did the first CS-800's have the limiter?
Yes, Peavey patented it as their DDT(distortion detection technique) compression, just pull the gain knobs out to disable it.

FWIW, the similarities between the CS-800 and BGW-750 are mostly born of those companies sourcing their sheet metal and heatsink extrusions from the same suppliers. Similarities in topology are merely coincidence, most big SSa mps of that era have similarities in their topology as the technology was still fairly infantile. They are not the same amplifiers.

I recently picked up a 750A and 201 pre-amp. Are there any recommended part upgrades I should make? (or more truthfully have my tech make). I've been comparing it with my Sansui G-9000. They both sound great to me but sound radically different from each other. The bgw sounds smoother with more detail in the mids and lower end where the Sansui has a more extended high end. I'm having a hard time figuring out which sounds better overall. I think the sansui is more colored and the btw is more accurate but I'm not sure. Any opinions?

Emmbee change all the caps on the 2 amp boards and the relay board new caps clean the contacts on the relay it can be taken apart, resolder the whole thing. i did it to my 750a and it sounds great very tight bass .

Thanks! I'm dropping it off at my techs tomorrow. I've come to the conclusion the BGW definitely sounds better to my ears. I'm using the Sansui as a the pre-amp for now. I'm hoping to trade my BGW model 201 pre-amp for something that works as well, but looks nicer. It's just so industrial. I don't think I can justify keeping the Sansui just as a pre-amp, but I sure love the way it looks. Some of those vintage Marantz pre-amps look nice and I bet they sound nice too.

Emmbee make sure they put nichicon muse caps you will hear a big difference, recap the bgw 201 i am using a phase linear 2000 and a audrie diffet 1 . i really love the bgw 750a wonderful bass has excellent woofer control. great damping factor. keep us posted on the progress!!

Hello Embee, I thought you had a G-8000, Oh by the way your tech is the best, and must be a genius. I use Muse capacitors when I can but the BGW driver boards use axial caps. If someone has a source for muse axial caps them please let me know.

I tell my wife I am an audio-pile-ist the bigger the pile the better!!

Yup. My tech is pretty kick-ass:) In case your curious Dave, Emmbee is the phonetic spelling of my initials MB. I can never get any "Mike" names without adding a ton of numbers at the end. Can't wait to hear the finished product. Just bought the best record collection in my life, so I'm really salivating. (over 1,500 with a ton of rare psych and garage!) Your right on the Sansui. I spaced it for some reason.

I'm going to be out of town until the 11th. It should be done by the time I get back. I'm throwing the 201 pre-amp on the "Bay". It may be awesome and match, but it's just too ugly for me. Hoping to maybe come across something nice when in Florida for vacation. Will also be testing a Sony TA-1150 as a pre-amp when I get back.

Ive stumbled across a few pre-amps while on vacation. I have a chance to pick up an Athena Sumo II for $200 and/or an Adcom gtp-500 for $35. Neither really have the look im going for but both seem to be good deals. Any opinions?

I'd suggest the Athena is well worth it. I think the build quality is very good and the Sumo designs in general well thought of. No experience with it directly but have been wanting to try it personally. Not familiar with the Adcom.
