Such is the hotness of the chilli that it can drive away the ghost, and hence the name ” says Anandita Dutta Tamuly who is getting ready to eat not 1 or 2, but 60 Bhut Jolokias in two minutes to make an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. Since the legendary chilli from Assam made it to the Guinnes Book last year, maybe it is time for Anandita to prove her mettle.

Someone told me about this a couple of days ago.
I'm a big fan of the Habanero chili, but it's not a 'yummy' chili,it's a chilli for the 'HOT' fans.
The Bhut Jolokia must be simply incredible. :tears: :scratch2:

theophille,

There are many other chilis including Naga Jolokia which easily beats Habarnero and other chilis there, Bhut Jolokia is exported outside India and I have ordered some as well, in case you need it directly from the source I can send you the address or I can send you some.

I don't see the point. I stop in a Peppers store in Rehoboth Beach, DE whenever I'm back that way and they have thousands of brands of hot sauce lining the walls, all with a hotness-rating. Who cares which one is the hottest, since you can't taste any flavor in them? I want ones with flavor, not blow-out-my-nose fire. Sorry, I'll pass....

For flavor check out Kashmiri Mirch from Kashmir India, has fruity flavor and gives fantastic color to your dishes, its mildly hot.

Yamaha1,
I did read about Naga Jolokia as well as Bhut Jolokia, and also found some sellers of seed on the 'net.
People sometimes misunderstand the true chilli afficionado's fondness for the extreme 'cutting-edge' of the chilli effect.Repeated exposure to very hot(and hotter still)chillis, diminishes the unpleasant effects, enabling an appreciation for the unique flavour which they do have.
Unless one has steadily 'acclimatised' oneself to these levels of hotness a jump up the scale is indeed a miserable experience. However people shouldn't assume that because their experience at a particular level of the chilli family was overwhelming, that all partakers are therefore in someway indulging in a masochistic pastime. :nono:
It just ain't so.
Chilli tolerance is a very individual thing, tied intimately to one's experience at a particular level. :thmbsp:

If you do try it, post your experience here, if you can't find it, I will be glad to send you some.

Maybe Anandita Dutta Tamuly can simultaneously appear on Letterman's show to set a "stupid human tricks" record...

On the other hand, some products seem to be all about machismo and not about taste at all. :)

I love spicy food, but HOT just for the sake of HOT is useless! I grew some Purira Peppers a few years ago and they were insane...they measured in the 600,000+ on the Scoville Unit Scale...Habaneros go up to 580,000. A group of friends got a buddy of ours to eat one for $50. His head turned purple, sweated profusely then puked...then he drank a half gallon of milk! He said he thought he was shitting lava in the morning!...I recommended to put some 'Tucks' in the freezer. Put that fire out!

Did anyone know that the Chilli pepper is one of the most nutritious foods in the world. The micronutrients as well as standard vitamins contained within the sweet to hot flesh outpace any other fruit or vegetable.

If you look at the link, you will see that the woman ate 60 of them in under 2 minutes and survived.

In response to the mention of machismo,'ego tripping' etc.
I'm sure this happens.
That's life.
If one likes to eat this type of chilli, alone, without an audience to perform for then the whole idea of machismo is irrelevant.
Some people can tolerate chilli heat and appreciate it.
If that isn't applicable, then don't worry about.Eat what suits you and stop thinking that anyone who likes it hot has an ego problem or is doing it for heat's sake.Because when one is used to the 'hot' stuff,it ain't hot anymore.

He should invite her, probably put many so called chili eating macho men to their rightful place. Also bear in mind, the people from that region in India grow up with these peppers and its incorporated in the daily cuisine they cook, nothing new to them, entire north east region from Bengal onward are used to this kind of chilis, recently there was a 5 year old kid who would eat nothing but these chilis from the tree and nothing bad happened to him.

I eat chili for taste, nothing to do with proving anything, the hotter they are, the more endorphins get released and one feels very good, fat better way to get high on good hormones than drugs or alcohol.

What Theophile says is true. I have built up a tolerance over the years because I truly love spicey foods. I grow jalapenos in my garden because I love their flavor and while they do have heat, they don't seem all that hot to me. I can eat them whole. My wife on the other hand cannot tolerate them whatsoever.

I also buy dried whole chilis from around the world. Piquins from Mexico, Sanaams from India, Tien Tsins from China and Dundicuts from Pakistan. Each has it's own distinct flavor and degree of heat. The Tien Tsin peppers are my favorite and have a very nice, almost smokey flavor and a wonderful heat sensation.

Cheers

Have you ordered some Bhut Jolokias yet? Also have you tried Kashmiri Mirch or Ajmeri Mirch.
