Bi Wire Recommendations

Hello All

Not trying to start a debate on high priced cables but I am in need of some advice on a solid pair of bi wire. I see a lot of these types of listings on ebay


here

I would rather not get something from China in this case. Also interested in advice on what to look for in terms of a used pair if it makes more sense.

My only experience with a set of bi-wire cables is the pair of Acoustic Zen Satori's I got a couple of years ago. They aren't cheap but they definitely improved the bass response and the clarity of the mid-range.

UsedCable dot com is a great site for finding used cables at a reasonable price.

In my experience, when looking at used cables you want to make sure they have the terminations you need or want and that those terminations are not corroded, bent or otherwise damaged.

Also, the cabling jacket and shielding layers should clean with no tears or rips.

Lastly, make sure they cabling has the proper gauge wire.

There was a member here...MikeCh I believe...who made cables. I used a pair on my Vandersteens and they sounded great.

I bought a reel of the in-wall 4 conductor wire from Monoprice. Combine the positives and grounds on one end, and use the other ends as-is. Dress them up with the connectors of your choice, and some heat shrink tubing, and you're done.

Look into Kimber 4PR / 4VR or 8PR / 8VR. It's braided bundles so one length can bi-wire a speaker. 4PR or 4VR will give two bundles per speaker post and 8PR or 8VR gives 4 per post.

I bought some for that very reason in the early 1990's and I'm pretty sure it's still in production. I found it a lot tidier than two separate cable pairs. It's good wire too and it looks cool.

I agree. I also use Kimber 8TC, and there are plenty of strands, if one needed to separate one side, for biwiring. Great sounding cable too, with incredible bass response/extension.

Something I've noticed with speaker wires I've used. Some I have used do better on the bass, others better on the highs. I haven't bi-wired yet but when I do, I'll keep this in mind.

Instead, consider making the big jump to bi-amping. I did, with a Luxman amp for the mids and tweeters, and a Nuvo class-D amp for the woofers, both working off the Luxman's volume pot. Yes, it can be done without an active electronic crossover, but amps must be chosen with care - my first bi-amp attempt sounded awful...

I made my own - from a recent post
I had enough odd length 14 gauge speaker cable on hand so I braided 3 pair. At the speaker end 1 pair goes to the high end while 2 pair are split and 4-way braided for the woofer. Learning the 4-way was challenging, but after a bit I had it down. At the amp end the pairs are split, 3-way braided to the bare conductors and soldered. No debate here - admittedly not high-end, marginally audible without bi-amping, but they look neat and tidy in comparison and cost me nada.
