I picked up a Bic 940 turntable yesterday at a flea market for $5.00. It is belt driven. It looks real nice. The turntable was stiff. I cleaned it up and got it working better but havent tried to play it yet. Are Bics any good? It seems fairly well made.

I sold many BIC's back in the late 70's, when I was with Pacific Stereo, can't ever remember anyone returning one due to problems or dissatisfacton. IIRC the 940 is one step up from the bottom of the line but still a decent sounding and good performing table. For $5.00 ya did good! :thmbsp:

I have had a couple of the BICs. I have one in my office system right now. I think they're great for a low price turntable. Put a decent cart in one and it sounds super. Not the be all end all, but for low dough, a great little player.

I like 'em a lot. Funny, I just picked up yet another 981 today for $12.50, with an Empire QX-66/E (?I think that is what's in it) cartridge. The platter is close to locked up, but that's a common problem with the bearing grease solidifying after all these years.

I really like the entire line of original BICs - congrats on your find!

The 940 was originally the entry-level BIC automatic tt/changer, but they quickly added the truly BOTL 920 with a small (10"? 9"?) platter and even flimsier construction.

I am kind of partial to the 960 myself. The arm on the 940 is sort of crude.

Those were decent enough automatics; VM's last gasp in the industry that they once (at least in the US) dominated.
