BIC 960 AntiSkate Questions

I just took delivery of an "as-is", "parts or repair" BIC 960. I have confirmed that the motor works and except for the tonearm, should be a clean and relube project.

Unfortunately, the tone arm has issues. The spring for the antiskate is gone, but more importantly, the adjustment ring for the antiskate is frozen.

I think that tracking force springs can be found. Does the antiskate use the same spring? Also does anyone have a suggestion as to unsticking the antiskate adjustment ring?

The ring is just held in by tabs and slides around the inside of the aluminum gimbal ring. If it's stuck just gently work it back and forth and it should release.

Contact Adam at South Street Service for BIC parts. The two springs are not the same. He sells one of them on eBay but I can't remember which one. Do a "BIC" search.

Cool. In case you've not found them, there's a series of videos on YouTube (by Jordan Pier) that are fantastic for showing the steps to disassemble and clean your 960.
Also the manual is on VinylEngine . . . I think that's where I found it?

South Street does have the spring and I was finally able to free the ring.

One other question. The part of the headshell connected to the tone arm has a noticeable droop. It doesn't look right to me. Is it supposed to be this way or flat like a typical headshell?

I think it should be FLAT, parallel to the record you're playing.
There was a gauge provided when new, but you can see how it would work from below even if you don't have it.

yeah it doesn't look right.
is that piece that fits into the aluminum tube broken? There are two screws underneath, one has a ground lug.

It looks like you might have another problem, but FYI, the little screw above the red dot is a cam. When you turn it, it adjusts the stylus rake angle of the headshell. Another cool feature of the 960 model.
 
Yes, that feature of the upper end of the original 900 series BIC's is much superior to the usual adjustment of the whole arm to get the cartridge top level. And most turntables don't even have a way to do that.

Anyway, yes, the arm tube coupler is bent or broken (you found it is bent). The coupler should stick straight out from the tube, not up or down, viewed from the side. You can try to straighten it but it may break , even if you try to do it slowly. South Street has those too.

After it's fixed, the cartridge angle is adjusted by the recessed screw on the headshell side as shown by the illustrations above.

The 940 has a different arm and is not as sophisticated as the higher models. On that, any angle adjustment has to be done with shims.
