BIC 960 Headshell Retaining Nut

Well-Known Member
Picked up a 960 but the headshell is missing the retaining nut. the SM doesn't indicate the size. Anyone know what size nut this is? Standard or metric? I believe these were USA made so I would assume standard. This is the black knurled nut that holds the headshell assembly on.

Just thought I would check to see if anyone knows before I have to do some hunting.

Thanks!

FWIW I just got one of those

Nut was missing

Table had a rattle

Nut was under the deck

Luck

Thanks. The multi play spindle was under the deck inside the clear plastic bottom - nice surprise but go figure why anyone would put it there. When I heard it rattling around in there I was sure there was something seriously wrong.

No such luck on that retaining nut though. it is so small it could have easily gone missing.

If I figure out size/thread count I will post it here.

Pulling it apart now - was able to get the platter off with a heat gun and a little force.

I just checked my BIC 960 and the nut size is 4-40. The original thumb-nut looks nice but any 4-40 nut would do. A nylon one would be lighter if you want to keep the weight down.

Thanks gridleakrick I confirmed the 4-40 size at the hware store. Hopefully folks will find this if searching for it.

If any one finds a good source for something nicer than a simple nut - chime in!
