BIC 960 Turntable end or record return

The tonearm height/brake pin and end-of-record cycle start are two separate issues. The height of the tonearm isn't related to whether or not the cycle begins at the end of a record.

The cork is an actual piece of cork stuck to the top of what is called the pickup arm lever which is connected to the tonearm at the pivot underneath the base plate. It is very thin and, as the tonearm is lifted by the cuing mechanism, the brake pin simultaneously lowers to contact the cork to hold the arm in position so it can't rotate while the tonearm is elevated. When the tonearm is lowered, the brake pin is released from the cork so the tonearm is free to pivot in normal operation. As discussed above, the tonearm needs to be at the correct height when the brake pin is released so it neither allows the tonearm to rotate before the stylus contacts the record nor keeps the tonearm from freely rotating after the stylus contacts the record surface.

The adjustment is made with the anti-skate set at a high level so the tonearm gets pulled outwar4d when the brake pin is released. This makes it easier to see when that actually happens.

The white donut in the return mechanism must be absolutely clean to maintain friction between it and the trip pawl and trip pawl plate so the trip pawl gets pushed into the path of the boss on the platter shaft so it gets shoved, moving the big red cam, starting a cycle by engaging the gear teeth.

The trip pawl is moved by the trip pawl plate, on the cam, being advanced by the pickup arm lever swinging over as a record is played. If the stylus is moving slowly, as when it is in the playing groove area, the trip pawl will just be pushed out of the way on each revolution. When the stylus reaches the runout area and moves quickly, the trip pawl moves fast enough to be pushed by the boss on the platter shaft and this starts the cycle. This is called a velocity-trip mechanism.

Some have used small, regular O-rings to substitute for the white donut but the coefficient of friction must be the same so there isn't TOO much friction which would cause too much force to be required to push the trip pawl out of the way during record play. That is why I would always try to save the white donut if at all possible.

This is adjusted by varying the cue rod lift height. look at the lift rod, There are two flats at the top. You can turn the rod using these flats. Either a small wrench or, BIC made a wrench for this. There are usually some on eBay from Turntable Experts (Dualparts).

The point at which the brake pin contacts the cork is actually a constant. The height of the tonearm when the brake pin makes contact is what you adjust. Adjust it so the brake pin just releases from the cork as the stylus is passing the edge of the record on the way down. Use anti-skate to see when the brake pin releases.

This is explained in the service manual.

My BIC 960 end of record issue. End of record engages. The tonearm moves towards the spindle about a quarter inch then lifts and cycles to the end. What can be causing this movement before the arm lifts and rests at the end of cycle? Jerry
 
It sounds like the brake pin isn't contacting the cork piece soon enough to stop the arm from moving as or before it is lifted.

How can I adjust it. This is the final piece of this puzzle for this 960. I have everything else working great.
 
Here's a photo of the area if that helps. I think the height of that brake pin is adjusted using washers (green arrow) . . . it's been a while, though. The cork is under the flat metal arm where that pin contacts it.

I described how to adjust it. You don't adjust the brake pin. You adjust the arm height in relation to when the brake pin contacts and releases from the cork pad.

Don't mess with the washers. You only need to make sure the brake pin moves freely in the casting.

What's actually happening is the arm is moving away from the spindle before lifting, not toward the spindle. The cause is the same. The brake pin is not in contact with the cork in time to stop the arm from moving horizontally before it gets lifted. It's moving away from the spindle because the anti-skate is pulling it away.
 
You have to follow my procedure to set the arm height at the time the brake pin contacts or releases from the cork pad. I'm afraid that's the only thing to do. That solves the problem of the arm moving horizontally before it's lifted or while it is elevated.

Have a BIC 960. I got everything working correctly. Cleaned and lubed. Only issue at the end of record the cam
is engaging, but the brake rod is not contacting the cork as soon as the arm begins to lift. Does anyone have
any pointers for me to adjust this?

Doug. What is the size of the wrench to adjust lift pin on BIC 960?
 
I don't know, exactly, because I have the wrench from BIC and it doesn't state the size. but it must be about 3/16" or so. The wrench is available from Adam at South Street Service, AKA Turntable Experts

Thanks Doug. One more question. Can you look at the attached video. Is the brake pin releasing to late or to early? Any suggestions?

In that case, it is more accurate to say the brake pin is not making contact soon enough. The arm is starting to lift before the brake pin is on the cork.
