BIC 9X0 platter rubber mat

Is there a way to remove the rubber mat from the platter in the BIC 9X0?
I want to use a cork mat but seems like the rubber and metal platter are binded together.
I can put the cork mat on top, it looks fine but not sure if the VTA is correct (tonearm seems level) with the record on.

advice? thanks!

The headshell on the 960/980 should allow for you to adjust the VTA to accomodate your cork mat. So you don't have to remove the BIC mat.

The mat is held in place by a lip that fits over a little edge around the outside. Get a sharp blade, like an X-acto chisel blade, between the mat and the platter and pry a little of the mat out. Once it's started you can pull the rest of the lip out and the mat will come right off.

On an original BIC 900 top end series, don't go by whether the arm tube is parallel to the platter or not. The VTA is adjusted by the eccentric screw under the knurled thumbscrew that holds the headshell on.

You want to adjust the screw until just the headshell top is parallel to the record surface. The VTA is then correct.

Not sure I understood which screw is it? Accessible from the top or bottom?
Also is there a way to measure headshell is parallel to platter when put down on record or just by eyeballing it from the side?

I believe you said you have a 960, right?

There is a hole in the headshell, on the side under the knurled screw that holds the headshell on the arm. In that hole is the slotted screw you turn to adjust VTA. There is an eccentric on the screw and as you turn it, you will see the angle of the headshell, relative to the arm tube, change.

I have gotten to just eyeball the parallelism of the top of the headshell to the record surface and BIC supplied a gauge with lines on it to make the adjustment but anything with parallel lines on it (like a recipe card) held on the record suface can be used. Just get the top of the shell parallel to the lines on whatever you use.

The mat comes off as Doug indicates. However if you want to use a mat on top on it, you may want to cut it so that the outer diameter fits inside the raised outer lip on the existing BIC mat. That should minimize any VTA issues.
