Calling all Metal Fans!

Anyone get to checkout that Big Four concert that was shown in select theaters recently? I had to work that night so I missed it but was able to find a dvd quality copy on one of those sites and wow what an event to be at!


Thoughts/opinions from fellow metal heads?


Sitting back it was kind of funny to see a bunch of near 50 year olds rock so hard up there but worth the wait never the less.

I would give my nuts to be able to see Metallica, but chances are they will NEVER make it to San Antonio, much less Texas. Any chance I could get a copy of that concert you mentioned?

I have a couple of friends that saw it in CA last week. They said that Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax were all great, but Metallica stunk to high heaven just as they expected they would.
 
I have tickets to see Megadeth, Slayer, and Testament in Cleveland this August. Should be a fun show!

As far as this show is concerned I think outside of Megadeth's guitarwork a lot of these guys have seen their better days. Dave Mustaine just keeps pumping out great metal. Whether you like his voice or not is another thing but I don't think the music can be debated!

I did enjoy how everyone joined in to play Diamond Head's "Am I evil" at the end. It seemed quite appropriate!

Actually, you'd note that if you are (were) a original fan of metallica you would be approching 40 now, assuming you like "Ride the lighting" (from 1984), and were 14 when introduced. Same for the other Big four, early 80's. Metal is old, nothing wrong with liking it...if that's what you are getting at:dunno:. Some of us don't outgrow music styles, but grow more into them, and liking metal doesn't mean you don't like other music...variety is th spice of life, after all.

Wish I could see the show. Also really wish I was going to see the Anthrax/Megadeth/Testament show, should be a killer concert. I went to Gigantour back in '08, and Megadeth tore it down. Acoustics were not great, but the playing was studio-quality (even if sound wasn't...the vocals were not mic'd correctly). I'll have to look for this show, as it's probably the only time I will catch a "live" metallica, as their tickets are crazy expensive, about $100 average:sigh:, on the other hand, I saw Megadeth/Children of bodom/in flames/job for a cowboy (and supposedly High on fire) for $20, going to see High on fire next month for $15, still don't know why metallica prices are so blasted high.

By the way, we have a metal topic, don't be afraid to stop by;).
 
When I was 14 I liked Metallica...I'm 18 now and today I just bought 2 new Frank Sinatra LP's :music:

:scratch2:...I'll be the first to say that I don't like metallica as much today, but still. Their earlier work (pre & including ...and justice for all) isn't great. I still like Dave Brubeck, Pete Rugolo, just about any old blues artist, Robert Johnson, howlin' wolf, etc. Even like pop. I still think there is little reason to ever outgrow music genres. Maybe diverage from the band you liked, but never give up on a whole genre, there are always unique and new things.

Metallica not heavy enough?, try Death...not experimental enough?, check out Sleep, a little bland?, try a foreign band, like Burzum, Aria, etc.

I started liking metallica when I was 14, about 20 now, still do, but I expanded my repertoire. Last music played was "High on fire", "rush", and then Zappa...Metal is not unsophisticated, it's not childish, it's just a different form of expression, some of the fans may be dumb, but a lot are very aware, even more so then many other forms of music.
 
I just stopped liking most rock/metal. I guess that I started searching for music that is more complex, better recorded, and actually has substance beyond 'f*ck yea I'm awesome everyone acknowledge my awesomeness'. For when I am driving or working out, it's great, but for serious listening...I just can't get into it.

It used to be that I enjoyed only what is termed classic rock, but my tastes have come a long way in that period. Now I listen to just about everything except common classic rock and metal.

The only metal that I still enjoy listening to on a regular basis is Dream Theatre, and that is more rock/prog than metal...oh, yeah, DragonForce is good, too.

Ah, it's all about personal taste I suppose. Dream theatre is pretty cool, John Petrucci is a unique guitar talent...even "liquid tension experiment" is a good listen. Dragonforce I can't get into:D, I tend to defend metal, as a genre, but agree that a lot of it is pretty mindless, but others make up for that:yes:. And regardless, metal is perfect driving music (I think deep purple has contributed quite a bit in that regard).

To each his own, I've meet people who actively hate ZZ top (man, what was their problem:rolleyes::D)
 
I got into Metallica/Megadeth/Anthrax at a really young age, because I had an Uncle that was only 11 years older than me, so he was jamming records like Ride The Lightning and others around me at the time.
I'm going to that Megadeth/Slayer/Testament show here in Portland, and I'm particularly excited since Megadeth will be playing Rust In Peace (probably my all time favorite metal record) from start to finish, and Slayer will be doing the same with Seasons In The Abyss.
 
I'm 48 and twenty years ago my nephews who are ten years younger than I would always try to get me into the four you mentioned.I tried but couldn't get into it.My teeth were already cut on 70's rock.My tastes have grown but not into the four you mentioned.I do like some Megadeath.
 
Well progressive rock is my favorite genre, so I'm no stranger to complex/complicated music. Can't get enough Camel lately specifically, BUT I love guitar it all of it's forms and genres and sometimes enjoy getting the adrenaline flowing! :yes:

This especially applies when lifting/running. It's hard to get fired up about bench pressing 315lbs listening to Camel....Or pushing yourself through that last mile running listening to Wonderous Stories by Yes....I'd much rather be listening to Piece by Piece by Slayer! :D

I guess my johnson hasn't stopped working and I have an abundence of testosterone so I haven't quit listening to metal yet :smoke:

Well my Johnson still works too. It just prefers Gin martinis, to beer and pot... :smoke: :D
