This pooch lives one town over. He needs a saddle, not a leash!

Travelling across the country, and meeting odd folk, I somehow ended up in an aquaintance of a friend's house who owned a Neufoundland. It was in Boulder, Colorado, and it was a rescue from the Nederlands just up north. It had been shot in the head and chest supposedly with a .22 and survived.

"It can kill a bear!" bragged the owner.

"it can crush your skull in it's mouth!" he beamed.

Dunno if any of this was true, and didn't press for verification.

We slept on the floor. I woke up to see the dog's mouth over my friend's head.

Nothing bad happened- the dog just wanted attention. It was like a giant kitten- doe eyed and harmless, and very friendly.

But huge. Biggest dog I'd ever seen.

Wow...I've never seen a doggie that big. I don't know if I'd be able to trust a pet that size especially with a 2 year old running around the house. :scratch2:

My sister's Olde English Mastiff, Frasier, is pretty ginormous, too. I'm 6' tall, he stands around waist-high, w/his head pretty much level w/my chest...He can easily put his island-sized paws on my shoulders, & his head is about the size of a bushel-basket. Dunno what he weighs, but I'm guessing easily in excess of 200 lbs...He's a big teddy-bear, too, he will take a doggie-treat easily out of yr mouth, altho I must admit to a bit of trepidation the 1st time I tried THAT trick. Yet he IS somewhat dangerous, not out of temperament, but just because of his huge size..He can easily hurt you just by "playing" w/you, an otherwise friendly swipe from a huge paw, could half-rip yr face off. But still, when you see him, all you wanna do is get in his fenced-in area w/him, & "wool" him...

Biggest dog I ever saw, was a 250+ pound Mastiff at a Dog Rescue.
My then 9 year-old daughter wanted him sooooo bad!?
I told her I was sorry, but he wouldn't fit in Daddy's car.

Those are truly Gentle Giants! They love people and just want lots of attention. They are a hoot to play with and scare the bejeebers out of most folks because of their size.
Growing up in Colorado I had a friend Scott who had two Belgian Mountain dogs, Bear the male weighed 280lbs, Bea the female weighed 220lbs. Both of them together would fill up the rear of his 1972 Blazer with the seat removed from the back!! Great big lummoxes and lovers but huge would come up to your stomach just standing there.

In my childhood, I had a friend in Wyoming who had two Neufoundlands. I still don't know how he managed to talk his parents into that one!

We would go to the local water hole to swim and the dogs would always come with us. The hole was in the Ten Sleep Creek, under a bridge, about a mile up the creek from town. We could jump off of the bridge into the water and swim as much as we could stand. The creek is primarily runoff from the Big Horn mountains, so the water temperature is still very cold, even in the dead of summer.

One dog was a male, the other female. The male's favorite past time was to fish for rocks from the bottom of the creek. The rocks were granite and were very round and polished from their long trip down from the mountains. That dog would swim to the bottom of the hole and pick up the biggest rock he could find and bring it up. Some of these rocks were the size of a large canteloupe. He would do this without stop and that was the problem! He would literally wear himself out, fetching these rocks, and some of them were too big for him to lift, so he would stay under, trying to get a grip. Not only did you have to watch him to make sure he didn't drown himself, you couldn't let him fetch too many because it was hell on his teeth!

I never will forget those two dogs.

Nice... sharing a home with a 180lb dog, that puts out about 20lbs of slober an hour..

20 lbs/hr ?That's what THIS lummox has in one jowl...You DON'T wanna wear fresh, clean clothes around him...They won't stay that way long...One of the saddest memories I have was going w/a buddy to get this Dobermann at a local shelter. He was filling out papers, etc, I went in the back & was looking around. There was a St. Bernard back there, he was in bad shape-Injured front paw, matted hair, emaciated. He looked at me w/the most pitiful, desperate look I ever saw in an animal-Like "For the love of God, PLEASE help me !!!...", & I noticed the "Pink slip" on his cage...He was due to be put down the following Tuesday, & it was Saturday then.... But there was nothing I could do- We already had 2 big dogs at that point, my parents woulda absolutely had 3 fits if I'd brought him home. But the look that dog gave me has stayed w/me for 25+ years now-I guess I'll have it the longest day I live. I DON'T go in the backlots of places like that anymore...Call me a coward, yeah, I guess I deserve it...
