Could be the lighting in the picture... Seems like "Rich,Black Furniture grade finish" means a new coat of spray paint. That is what it looks like to me anyways.
 
My cursory research appears to indicate these were available in black originally -- but I totally feel you on the spray paint look.
 
These have been floating around for a while. I'd say for $800 they may be worth it, but these are VERY early Sound Labs and I doubt parts or upgrades are available. Beware!
 
I emailed a Sound Lab dealer about them and he advised me to stay away...too old and no parts available...tempting as they are! Asking price was down to $550 or so at one point...as much as I'd like to hear these I'd probably look at some Acoustat's or Apogees or something that you know can be repaired. Just my 2 cents.
