As the frequency range of recording media and gear for recording and playback grew wider, this became increasingly true of the 604's rolled off response.
I've lived with 604-8G's in a main system for a total of about 15 years during two different periods of my life. Altec got good bass extension out of them with the introduction of the 620 cabinet, for many folks the size is overwhelming and considered massive. For me, and many i know, getting good upper end out of them requires significant equalization, there's just no way around it. Even by today's standards the 604 can stand on it's own and be jaw-droppingly good with the right musical program and upstream electronics.
That said, Altec was well aware of the 604's limitations, and for those customers who were willing to foot the bill for something better, Altec made a product.
