Bizarre Symptoms for Marantz 3800

Hi All!

I need some help diagnosing some very disturbing symptoms with my 3800 that JUST came back from the shop!

  1. There is modest output even when the volume is at zero. (Running either Aux input, or Tape 1. Will try other inputs as well, but may not use current speakers to test).
  2. Don’t get consistent, sufficient volume from amp as volume knob is turned up. (Expected performance and volume as connected to Hafler pre. The Marantz is rated almost identically to my DH220 amp – and seems to hit similar volume)
  3. Significant “pop” when turning on 3800 pre.
  4. After minutes of play – amplifier speaker relay begins cycling on/off coupled with serious “pop”.
  5. Observed woofers moving in-and-out slowly (ie: being “sucked” into the basket, then pushed back out – but no change in sound) then went into the “cycling” with poping and triggering the speaker relay in the amp.
I found a replacement for the uA749PC chip from LittleDiode – NOS

Hoped it would magically fix the issue, but alas – no improvement and some other weird symptoms.

Did your tech reflow the sockets and pins that plugs together ?? I had a 3800 that was popping and did just that and wella nice and quiet.

What does it mean to reflow the sockets?

The sockets and pins that are are soldered on the boards.
The 3800 I just serviced had an issue with connections from the tone board and the preamp board.
The solder connections were intermittent on the side where the mode selector is located.

I just added some fresh solder the each joint on the socket and pins and all was good.

Good luck
