Apparently this is a re-painted rt-909, not an original black model. Seller's asking $2150. If it sells at that price, it might induce somebody to go into the business. Silver knobs and tension reels seem a little cheesy, but IMO it still looks pretty cool.

Just noticed, somebody bid $900 for a black eBay rt-707; same seller.

...for that price, one could get & rehab an Otari 5050 and have the performance of half-track, 15ips, balanced I/O and ability to play (and BUY!)
TP tapes.
Just saying...:scratch2:

The same seller currently has an RT-707 painted black with a couple of reels at a BIN of $900.

Here's the 909.

His repaints look great.

An INOP 909 is at $459 right now. Shocking to me.

I'm not shocked about the actual prices. The stuff is rare today.
A cometically mint unit but inoperable is in my oppinion much more worth as a working one with cosmetical issues.
Electronincs and mechanics can be serviced but scratches and dents aren't reparable.

The actual black RT-909 looks fine from far, but having a closer look you will see the coating is like the oranage skin. I would never want to have such one, I have my own black RT-909 which is build as it should be and that's a huge difference.
And half silver half black looks strange to me.

Kind regards,
Vlad

Hm...Lot of peoples think about as it would be a good business. But isn't. I have my black RT-909 complete and build as it should be, no paint cans and the same.
The tensioners and the reel tables as well the buttons aren't possible to be done with the rattle can.
I did the reel tables in a factory and they spend over 6 months for trials with different coatings to meet the requirements: very thin layer of coating, very resistant against scratches and very good looking finnish.
The final solution was a high tech ceramic compound. You can be sure such a high tech coating is Star Trek agianst a garrage paint job and for sure not to have for just 5 bucks.

If you ask a factory for some thing, you will be asked back: how many thousand pieces do you want to have....

To be able to mod the tensioners to black it is a must to remove first the tape guide from the tensioner table. But they can't be removed without to break them.

You can imagine yourself the rest of the story.
I know that a budget of US$ 5000,- isn't enough to modd the RT-909 to black in a high quality finnish as it was made from Pioneer.
Any kind of paint job and then the half of the deck in silver and the other half in black is in my oppinion a massive damage of the so beautiful silver RT.

Kind Regards,
Vlad

Half silver looks utter pants IMO - It looks like someone knocked it up their shed! A 'have a go' job.
