Blank Reel to Reel tapes - value?

canuckaudiog

On a quest for high fidelity
Anyone know what blank reel to reel tapes generally go for? I might have found a bunch going for $5-$12 each.

You need to provide more info on brand, size, metal or plastic, condition, etc. for a value determination. A 10" Maxell in great shape on a metal reel will be worth considerably more than a 7" Shamrock on a plastic reel in poor condition.

I sold some 10" maxel xl EE that were still sealed for about $80 each. Those particular reels are the only ones I've had experience with.

Like Mingo said above, we need more information on the reels. I had ReVox metal reels that would sell between 80-140 a piece. Maxell reel's like bwayjoes stated can sell at 80 if sealed, I've also seen Pioneer reels sell for 100+. Put it this way, the metal reels are typically more valuable than plastic, but subjective to the maker.

Sony SLH and PR have a tendency to suffer from dry tape squeal (the lube formula in the tape dries up and it squeals when you try to play it). Probably best to skip the Sony stuff, but the BASF tape is very good. I probably wouldn't pay $12 for a 7" reel of it, but for 5-6 bucks a reel it would be a nice grab.

Okay thanks! I'll see what I can do. They look to be priced at $5 each judging from the picture.

Any value at all on 7'' used ones, was at a garage sale the other day and they had boxes of them.

Yes, though sealed/unused tapes are worth much, much more! Depending on what you can get the tapes for, there might be a profit to be made.

I thought used tapes were $2-3??

Would there be any value if there is something good recorded on them?

I just picked up a few from the late '50's..
