Blaupunkt `in car' CD Player conversion......

Hi,

Would it be possible for someone who knew what they were doing, to convert a 10 disk remote CD player; the kind operated from the dashboard car radio, to read DVDs? Maybe a daft idea but DVDs and Cd's are the same size, so presumably the disk select and transport mechanism would handle DVDs. Add in the electronics from a dead (screen damaged) portable DVD player and the flat screen from a computer monitor, and maybe this could be a cool low budget child pacifier for long car journeys. I must underline knew what they were doing; my eldest daughter's partner does, but I wanted to run this past informed opinion here before sounding him out.

I have a feeling by the time he got it to work it wouldn't be so "low budget" anymore. Plus there's a bunch of these things on the market already as there's a good sized demand for them...

Before our last long road trip I purchased two Philips DVD portables w/ 7" screens, one for each progeny. They have a five hour battery life & an out the door cost for the pair of under $200.

Nothing is impossible, but as JimJ points out it would not be "low budget" any more unless you are an electronic wizard (and then you properly would not have made this post).

You have to remember that the only thing CD's and DVD's really have in common is the physical size and that they are digital, the lasers operates at different wavelength and the density of data is about 7 times bigger on a DVD. Even if you do succeed in transferring the transport from the broken DVD-Player you still have to deal with the digital signal coming from it, the CD-P runs 44.1 kHz 16 bit - the DVD usually uses 48 kHz 16 bit (but with DVD-Audio it can be up to 192 kHz 24 bit). This means that the DAC properly also have to be changed, in the end only the box and maybe the analogue part of the CD-P will be left.

It is not a walk in the park.

Just got back from a couple of days away; what you say makes a lot of sense. I was kind of anticipating that it wouldn't be a walk in the park; my query was more a kind of `what if............? than a declaration of intent. The background was to wonder if it would be practical to use the disk storage/select/and play functions of the cd player and canablise the portable DVD player for it's laser and DAC but if two portable DVD players can be bought for less than $200 (about £100) the pair, it really would be a bit pointless~~~~~~
